Avent Slovakia, a subsidiary of the Kimberly-Clark Corporation (U.S.), is to end its surgical gown-making operation in Piešťany (Trnava region) and dismiss all its 800 staff by the end of 2008, it was reported on January 21.
Ministry to launch tender for Jaslovské Bohunice plant's fifth block
The Economy Ministry is preparing the conditions for launching an international tender for the construction of the fifth block of the Jaslovské Bohunice (Trnava region) nuclear plant, Economy Minister Ľubomír Jahnátek reported on January 21.
STV requests a billion crowns in debt relief
The Council of public broadcaster Slovak Television (STV) has approved the STV budget, which again counts on a loss in 2008 and expects Sk1 billion from state coffers to cover part of the loss (10 percent) and to provide funds for a new sports channel - STV3, the Sme daily reported, according to the TASR newswire.
Do-nothing parliament on day of no-confidence vote
On January 21, the Sme daily wrote that parliament will sit on its hands that evening, as the sole point on the agenda is a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Robert Fico. But unlike in December, when all the opposition MPs walked out in protest of the vote’s time slot in the wee hours, the Christian Democrats (KDH) will take part.

Switchgear producers fined Sk 350 mln.
The Antitrust Office (PMÚ) handed down a Sk350-million fine to companies from across Europe and Asia for forming a gas insulated switchgear (GIS) cartel. The office said an agreement the companies signed in 1988 violates the European Commission Treaty's ban on restrictive business practices by allegedly fixing prices, carving up the global market and coordinating GIS public procurement procedures. The agreement covered business across the world, except the United States and Canada.
Environment Ministry tender smacks of nepotism
On January 21, the Hospodárske noviny economic daily published on its front page that a Sk30-million has been awarded to the Satur Travel agency, which will arrange the travel plans and visa needs of all MPs.

Czech power station coming to Košice
THE CZECH energy company ČEZ is continuing its move into the Slovak electricity production market. Only one month after it agreed to build a steam-gas facility at the Slovnaft oil refinery in Bratislava, it signed a memorandum of understanding that could let it generate power on the premises of the U.S. Steel Košice steelworks, the Hospodárske Noviny daily wrote.
