Days of Forget-Me-Not brings in almost three million

IN 2007, the League for Mental Health (Liga za duševné zdravie) collected almost three million crowns during the fund-raising Days of Forget-Me-Not, Oľga Valentová from the League informed the SITA newswire on January 17. Last year, the national fund-raising was organised by the LDZ for the fourth time, thus picking up the threads of its effort aimed at "diminishing the social seclusion of people with mental problems," as the press release reads. Part of the campaign was the exhibition of works by artists with mental illnesses called Views from Within, discussions with experts in various regions of Slovakia, a media campaign, and a gala evening, when the Slovak LDZ Awards were granted for contribution to mental health. All who contributed financially got a plastic flower - a forget-me-not.

THE LEADING Russian manufacturer of refractory materials, Magnezit Group, has acquired the Lubeník-based company Slovmag. Slovmag is the second-biggest producer of magnesite refractory materials in Slovakia.

Robbery suspect on the run

THE POLICE are continuing their search for alleged bank robber Roman Červenka, who fled from a hospital in Bratislava, the SITA newswire wrote. The accused might be armed. Spokesman of the Police Presidium Martin Korch told the SITA newswire that the police are also searching via the Schengen Information System, which enables them to detain him in another member country.

Tesco stores SR to open 60th outlet this week

The joint-stock company Tesco Stores SR will have sixty outlets in Slovakia by the end of this week. The firm opened a supermarket in Kráľovský Chlmec on January 24, while a Tesco hypermarket will open its doors to the public in Púchov on Saturday.

NBS Governor says Slovak banks are immune to financial crisis

The Governor of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) Ivan Šramko perceives the global financial crisis as serious, but posing no risk to Slovak banks. In his words, the crisis in the United States was caused by low standards in mortgage lending, which eventually led to an increased number of people unable to repay their debts. Banks in Europe, including Slovakia, have no problems with clients' solvency, the NBS governor said at Thursday's press conference of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Fewer people in Slovakia received unemployment benefits in 2007

The average number of people in Slovakia last year with unemployment benefits was 22,000, as data of the social security provider Sociálna Poisťovňa shows. In 2006, there were nearly 27,000 recipients of unemployment benefits.

Čaplovič: New anti-discrimination amendment will meet obligations

Deputy Premier for a Knowledge-based Society, European Affairs, Human Rights and Minorities Dušan Čaplovič said on January 23 that a proposal for an anti-discrimination amendment will meet Slovakia's obligations in the sphere of gender equality. Čaplovič was speaking at a meeting of the parliamentary committee for human rights, nationalities and the status of women. The obligations in question stem from EU regulations pertaining to the equal treatment of men and women in regard to their access to products and services.

EU: Members have to increase use of renewable energy sources

Slovakia will have to increase the share of energy from renewable sources from its current 6.7 percent to 14 percent by 2020. That's the word from the European Commission in Brussels on January 23 in a statement related to the fight against climate change and safeguarding energy security in the European Union. Regarding CO2 emissions, which don't fall under the so-called emissions trade scheme (ETS), Slovakia can produce 13 percent more emissions. This ensues from the series of proposals presented on Wednesday by the European Commission.

Culture Minister Marek Maďarič won't retract the proposed new Press Act even though Foreign Affairs Minister Ján Kubiš obtained a request to do so from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), it was announced on January 23.

Europe dislikes our new Press Act

On the same day, the economic daily Hospodárske noviny reports that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) warned on January 22 that Slovakia's draft press bill will significantly limit freedom of press. Simultaneously, OSCE asked the Slovak Parliament to turn down the controversial bill. OSCE representative for freedom of media Miklós Haraszti wrote Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Ján Kubiš that the bill contains sections that might significantly reduce independence of editorial desks, which would contradict Slovakia's international obligations to protect the freedom of media. Eurostat: New industrial orders in Slovakia up 12.2 pct in November

The year-on-year growth rate of new industrial orders in Slovakia decelerated from 19.9 percent in October to 12.2 percent in November. Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, reported that Slovakia had the eighth highest growth in new industrial orders among the nineteen EU countries that provided data to Eurostat. In a month-on-month comparison, industrial orders in the Slovak industry decreased 3 percent in November following a 3.4-percent growth in October.

Second round of talks on Lebanon's restoration begins in Bratislava

The second round of talks between Lebanese and Slovak entrepreneurs aimed at resolving the current political crisis in Lebanon is being held at the Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency (SARIO); it was reported on January 22. This week's session in Bratislava represents the first workshop of a project called the Restoration of Lebanon. The first round of talks took place in autumn 2007. The current session is due to finish on Wednesday, January 23.

Premium dodgers might go to prison

Social-insurance provider Sociálna Poisťovňa intends to collect money from its debtors at any price in the following two years, writes the Pravda daily on January 23. Since it wants to also use the Penal Code, Sociálna Poisťovňa's biggest debtors might be imprisoned for 12 years. However, one of the biggest debtors, some state hospitals, will avoid this punishment again, since the state cannot criminally prosecute itself. Contrary to state organizations, private firms probably will not evade the penalty.

Hort: Fico threatened me at parliamentary debate

According to the SDKÚ-DS caucus chairman Milan Hort, Prime Minister Robert Fico threatened him on the sidelines of a parliamentary debate devoted to a no-confidence vote in the PM on January 21. Hort was speaking to reporters at a news conference held by the opposition parties after the premier survived the vote by a wide margin on Tuesday, January 22.
