Hungarian ambassador summoned over Mlynky
THE SLOVAK Foreign Affairs Ministry summoned Hungarian Ambassador Antal Heizer on March 26 to explain the recent goings-on in Mlynky, a village in Hungary that is 55 percent Slovak.
Giant Easter egg sculpted from snow
PETER Petras, keeper of Reinerova Chata, a mountain chalet in the High Tatras, has sculpted what is probably the biggest Easter egg of this season. The snow egg, is which more than two metres high, is complemented by a giant whisk measuring 37.8 metres long.
AVC Čadca leaves the Engineering Industry Association
AVC Čadca, which supplies car producers, is leaving the Slovak Engineering Industry Association (ZSP) in protest at a recently-signed collective agreement with trade unions. ZSP signed the agreement with OZ KOVO, the trade union organisation representing engineering workers, in mid March pushing up wages in Slovakia's key industrial sectors by 6.5 percent.

Corporate financial morals take a slide
SLOVAK firms have been getting worse at paying their debts and meeting their financial obligations over the past two years. Istrobanka bought by ČSOB owner
ČSOB bank has been consolidating its position in the Slovak market. The bank's owner, the Belgian banking and insurance group KBC, agreed on March 21 on to buy Istrobanka from the Austrian bank BAWAG. KBC Group will pay BAWAG Ř350 million for Istrobanka, representing 3.5 times its book value, the Pravda daily wrote. This significantly exceeds estimates by Austrian analysts, who had valued Istrobanka at about half its selling price.

New book tells The Castle's Story
THE CASTLE is one of the most distinctive features of Bratislava's skyline, and a favourite destination for tourists. The place exudes history - the Crown Tower, for instance, is one of the oldest buildings in the city - but, in spite of this, books about the castle are relatively few. A recent addition is Príbeh hradu/The Story of the Castle in Bratislava by Adela Markovich and Jana Hutťanová. Written half in Slovak and half in English, it was published by Kala last year to fill what the company saw as a gap in the market.

FOUR consortia have been given the go-ahead to tender for a contract to build and operate about 50 kilometres of highways in a public-private partnership (PPP). The Transport Ministry announced the names of the shortlisted consortia, which will be invited to take part in the next step in the process on March 25, the SITA newswire wrote.
