Central bank keeps key interest rates on hold again
IN LINE with expectations, the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) kept its interest rates unchanged on March 25. This means that the two-week sterilisation repo-rate - its key rate, from which commercial banks' deposit and loan rates are derived - remains at 4.25 percent per annum. The central bank kept the one-day sterilisation repo rate at 2.25 percent p.a. and the one-day refinancing rate at 5.75 percent p.a., the SITA newswire wrote.
Seven sins of the Press Code
ALL SLOVAKIA'S major daily newspapers were published with blank front pages on Thursday, March 27, in protest of the government's controversial attempt to revise the Press Code. Their covers each featured just a short, identical notice to readers listing their most serious objections to the proposed Press Code, which has attracted criticism from both Slovak publishers and the international community.
No news from EC on bear census
ROBIN RIGG, head of the bear research project at the Society for Research, Education and Coexistence with Nature, told the SITA newswire that he is still waiting to hear whether the European Commission will finance a three-year census of the bear population in Slovakia.
Storks are already here
NOT LONG since the first swallow arrived here, the first white storks have started circling above Slovakia. These elegant birds are considered the most famous harbingers of spring in Slovakia. The very first ones appeared in mid March near Malá Domaša (in the Vranov nad Topľou District), the SITA newswire wrote.

Drop in illegal immigrants since Schengen
Since Slovakia entered the Schengen Zone on December 21, 2007, there have been 274 illegal immigrants detained as of March 20 at Slovak borders and airports, SLOVAKIA was told by Vladimíra Hrebeňáková from the Interior Ministry press department. This was down from 567 in January 1-March 20, 2007.
German companies find Slovakia highly attractive
German investors view Slovakia as the most attractive location for investment in Central and Eastern Europe, according to the results of a survey by the Slovak-German Trade and Industry Chamber (SNOPK) that were announced on March 27.
World's biggest maths contest draws in thousands of Slovak pupils
Around 87,000 pupils from 1,436 primary and secondary schools in Slovakia have entered the world's largest mathematics competition - the Mathematical Kangaroo, Vladimir Burjan, one of organisers of the event, told SLOVAKIA on March 27.
Radičova: No faction of allies in the SDKÚ

In protest of the draft Press Code that the governing coalition is trying to push through parliament, Slovak dailies came out on March 27 with identical cover pages that railed against what they called the draft’s “anti-democratic nature”.
“Comrade Bollová” may run for president
The Nový Čas daily wrote on March 27 that the central committee of the non-parliamentary Communist Party of Slovakia (KSS) will decide by the end of April whether to support Dagmar Bollová’s bid for president.

Phishing attack on SLSP switches to Slovak
Hackers who sent a fraudulent e-mail message to clients of Slovenská Sporiteľňa savings bank (SLSP) asking for their account details have replaced the English-language messages with Slovak, ESET IT security company worker Martin Baranovič said on March 26.
Parliamentary Committee recommends approval of Press Bill
The parliamentary committee for culture and the media recommended on March 26 that Parliament approve the Government's new draft of the Press Bill. However, it also recommended amending proposals submitted by governing-coalition Smer-SD party MP Ján Podmanický, the TASR newswire wrote.
Statistics Office to survey incomes and living conditions
Slovakia's Statistics Office is due to gather statistical data on incomes and living conditions of Slovak households between April 1-30 this year, the Office announced on March 26. The aim of the project, called EU SILC 2008, is to come up with a common framework for a systematic creation of statistics on poverty, incomes and living conditions in households of EU-member countries, the TASR newswire wrote.
Bratislava-Vienna catamaran connection to be five times daily
The river connection between Bratislava and Vienna will be more frequent, as a second Twin City Liner is to start operating as of mid-May, Ronald Schrems, general director of the Austria-based Central Danube Region company told the TASR newswire on March 26.
Slovakia ready for price checks during euro changeover
The Slovak Trade Inspectorate (SOI) is preparing to conduct thousands of checks during the obligatory dual-pricing period which will precede the introduction of the euro in Slovakia. This is intended to prevent unjustified price hikes, the SITA newswire writes. According to the SOI’s central director, Nadežda Machutová, another goal is to improve the realistic perception of prices by consumers. She is recommending that people don’t overpay for products and services by rounding up the totals in euros (in favour of the shops) but take the change, because each cent will have its value. Machutová reminded businesses to implement the necessary steps to allow for display of pricing in both currencies, because the SOI will use all its powers to check that this obligation is observed from the start. Every unjustified increase in the prices of goods and services will be classed as a violation of the General Law regulating the euro changeover.
Bank customers hit by phishing attack
A Slovak phishing e-mail, aimed at eliciting personal data from clients related to their accounts at Slovenská Sporiteľňa (SLSP), has appeared. The message was first sent in an English-language version, followed shortly afterwards by a version translated into Slovak. Slovak IT security firm ESET detected the Slovak version targeting SLSP clients early in the morning when it updated its database of samples, the SITA newswire wrote.
