PAS: Business climate deteriorates
THE BUSINESS environment in Slovakia deteriorated significantly in the first quarter of 2009 according to the Business Environment Index, calculated quarterly by the Slovak Business Alliance (PAS). The index fell by 3.33 percent on a quarterly basis to 109.5 points, the SITA newswire reported.
Man sues to become ‘un-Christian’
THE REGIONAL Court in Košice has confirmed the verdict of the first instance court in an unusual case in which a resident of Košice, Michal Holováč, filed a lawsuit against both the Greek-Orthodox Church in Slovakia and the Greek-Catholic Church requesting that the court oblige both churches to cancel his membership in them and provide written confirmation of doing so.

THE GREAT Moravian settlement Valy in Mikulčice in the Czech Republic and the Slovak village of Kopčany may both become UNESCO world heritage sites, with a decision expected soon.
Slovakia backs use of French language
IN NEGOTIATIONS at the European Union, Slovakia will support use of the French language, which along with English is one of the EU’s languages of discussion. On June 4, the Slovak government signed a memorandum about teaching of the French language in the Slovak state administration, which will be a continuation of an existing programme from 2006, the SITA newswire wrote.

Over 30 Slovak students injured in bus crash on Austrian highway
A CZECH bus carrying Slovak students on a return trip from a holiday in Italy crashed in the Styria area of Austria on Sunday, June 21. Over 30 people were injured in the accident and three persons are reported to be in serious condition, Slovak Foreign Ministry's spokesman Ján Škoda told the SITA newswire.

Complete restaurant smoking ban tabled in Slovak parliament
People will still be allowed to smoke in Slovak restaurants, cafes and bars under certain conditions, as parliament on June 18 decided to halt debate on an amendment to the Non-Smokers Protection Act submitted by Tatiana Rosová, Villiam Novotný and Peter Markovič, all from the SDKÚ party, the TASR newswire reported.
NGOs ask some members of the Judicial Council if they are biased towards Harabin
Several non-governmental organisations and several judges led by the Fair Play Alliance and Transparency International Slovakia called on several members of the Judicial Council to state whether or not they are biased in favour of Justice Minister Štefan Harabin, one of the two candidates for the post of Supreme Court chairman, the TASR newswire wrote.

Dozens of Slovak activists rallied Thursday, June 18, outside the capital’s Presidential Palace, where head of state Ivan Gašparovič met his visiting Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao, protesting Chinese disrespect for human rights, newswires reported.

A Specialised Criminal Court to be based in Pezinok, north of Bratislava, will be established, as 119 MPs backed the government's proposal to do so in a vote in parliament on June 18, the TASR newswire wrote.

Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Slovakia for a two-day visit with nourishing economic cooperation on his agenda. However, the arrival of the Chinese president, who is scheduled to meet Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Economy Minister Ľubomír Jahnátek, among others in the Slovak capital, was far from what Bratislava has seen during recent visits of other state officials.

Court rules on housing discrimination in Sabinov
THE PREŠOV District Court has ruled that the town of Sabinov and the state Construction Ministry acted in a discriminatory way towards a group of Roma citizens living in the town. The court ordered the plaintiffs to be paid €1,000 in damages, the regional Korzár daily reported.

Government agrees to bankroll creation of thousands of farm jobs
The government on Wednesday, June 17, approved a proposal co-sponsored by the Labour and Agriculture Ministries to release €16.6 million to create thousands of farm jobs in a move aimed at softening the impact of the global economic crisis, the TASR wrote.
