Slovak lawmakers have resumed their 42nd plenary session on Tuesday, October 27 dealing with an agenda that includes a revision to the law on narcotic and psychotropic drugs and substances, the SITA newswire wrote.
Labour Minister says there is no money now for extending unemployment benefits
No funds have yet been allocated for extending the period for drawing unemployment benefits, said Labour Minister Viera Tomanová at a press conference following a session of the tripartite social partners (unions, employers and government) on October 26, the TASR newswire reported.

Electronic media object to ban on political advertising
Electronic media in Slovakia are objecting to a ban on broadcasting of political advertising leading up to the regional elections in November. The TA3 news channel told SITA that the Council for Broadcasting and Retransmission, in its statement on the election campaign, stated that it will consider the broadcasting of political ads for the regional elections to be violations of the law on broadcasting and retransmission.
Bankrupt chemical firm should continue operations says Economy Minister
Although in bankruptcy, Novácke Chemické Závody (NCHZ), is showing vitality and should continue operations, said Economy Minister Ľubomír Jahnátek following talks with NCHZ's bankruptcy trustee, Ján Súkenník, the firm’s management, creditors and trade unions in Nováky on October 26, the TASR newswire reported.
Controversy over quick degree awarded by Trenčín University
It isn't possible to obtain a degree after one year of study, Miroslav Mečár, the Rector of Alexander Dubček Trenčín University told the TASR newswire in reaction to information in the media concerning Daniela Banóciová, the daughter of the dean of the School of Social and Economic Sciences, who was awarded a degree in 2007 after just a few months of study.

Slovakia’s central bank cautions about state budget proposal

The second pension pillar could be worthwhile for only 15 percent of the 1.4 million currently-enrolled participants, said the Minister of Labour, Social Affairs and Family, Viera Tomanová, adding at the October 26 session of the Economic and Social Council of the Slovak Republic, that the second pillar is not about saving but about investing, which has brought losses to all participants thus far, the SITA newswire wrote.

University Library in Bratislava celebrates 90 years
University Library in Bratislava is the oldest research library in Slovakia and its founding is connected with the history of both the first Czechoslovak Republic and Comenius University in Bratislava. It opened on October 10, 1919 on the foundations of the former library of Elisabethan University, a Hungarian language university.

Ancient ruins of the Peruvian town of Machu Picchu, Antonio Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia cathedral in Spain, and Lietava Castle in Slovakia are among 93 cultural heritage sites around the world marked as threatened due to neglect or needing preservation, said the World Monuments Fund (WMF) at the beginning of October.
Slovak mead and honey win gold medals
Slovak producers of mead called Bohemiana, honey from acacia trees, and Beed (Včelovina) were among the winners of gold medals at the 3rd World Competition of Honey and Meads called Apimondia 2009 held in France. Slovakia was among the most successful countries at the event that brought together 200 exhibitors, 500 experts and more than 10,000 visitors from more than 100 countries.
Czech Republic awards Slovaks for environmental efforts
The Czech Republic has a tradition of awarding prizes to individuals for their outstanding activities undertaken in the field of environmental protection. Czech Environment Minister Ladislav Miko continued this tradition in October and gave several awards to Slovaks for the first time. The minister honoured important publications released during the Czech EU presidency and special honourable mention went to Slovaks Jan Pokorný, Juraj Kohutiar, Martin Kováč, Michal Kravčík, and Eugen Tóth for their book Water for Climate Recovery – A New Water Paradigm (Voda pre ozdravenie klímy – nová vodná paradigma).
