Investor wants to build solar plant for €68 million near Lučenec
A solar power plant may be built near Lučenec in southern Slovakia, with investment costs of €68 million, by the Bovinex Europa company owned by a private Italian resident, the SITA newswire reported.
Slovakia's airspace remains closed due to volcanic ash from Iceland
Slovakia's airspace remains closed until further notice due to the volcanic ash cloud drifting across Europe from Iceland, the spokesman for the Transport, Posts and Telecommunications Ministry, Stanislav Jurikovič, told the TASR newswire on April 18.
Daffodil Day yields nearly €200,000 in Bratislava
Preliminary figures suggest that close to €200,000 was collected by the League Against Cancer (LPR) in Bratislava on this year’s Daffodil Day on Friday, April 16, the League's PR manager, Martina Myjavcová, told the TASR newswire on April 17. Figures on the entire amount raised throughout Slovakia will be available within three weeks, she added. Some 15,600 volunteers took to the streets nation-wide handing out daffodils in exchange for a voluntary contribution. The funds are to be invested into cancer research and help for patients. The overall number of flowers handed out on Friday reached more than 1.3 million, added Myjavcová.
Slovak officials attend funeral of Polish President Kaczynski
On Sunday April 18, Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria, who died in a plane crash on April 10 near the site of Katyna in Russia, were buried in a ceremony at the Wawel Cathedral in the city of Krakow, the Sme daily wrote on its website on April 18.
Supreme Court Senate chair resigns
SUPREME Court Senate Chairman Jozef Kandera, the presiding judge in the case of alleged organised crime boss Branislav Adamčo and the so-called 'acid gang' that dissolved the corpses of its victims in acid, resigned from his post on April 13.
Slovaks mourn with Poles
THE TRAGIC air accident on Saturday, April 10, which claimed the life of the president of Poland along with those of his wife and a significant portion of Poland’s political elite has generated huge sympathy in Slovakia, where many people – ordinary folk and politicians alike – have strong ties to Poland and Poles. Condolences started pouring in from all parts of the country immediately after news of the tragedy first emerged.

THE COLISEUM of politics has opened its gates in Slovakia, inviting the public to hear all the promises that politicians always offer but rarely keep. Dim-witted jokes served by male entertainers dressed in female clothes; a huge green truck threatening to roll into 500 municipalities; a Christian Democrat ringing random doorbells, seeking someone to invite him into the living room for a brief political discourse; or a party dispatching mails addressing those who open them as celebrities: all these are images from Slovakia’s pre-election Coliseum spectacle.
Parts of Bratislava Castle prepare to reopen to the public
SOME sections of Bratislava Castle will soon – before the summer season – be opened to the public, two years after renovations began. The Yard of Honour in front of the castle, which had been in a forlorn state, and the inner courtyard (except for part where archaeological findings are being further prepared, and the Treasury) will open and summer visitors will probably also get to see the Ceremonial Staircase and some renovated interior halls.
Elementary school writes the best book
PUPILS and teachers at the Dobrá Niva elementary school in Zvolen District wrote a book titled Gavurky which won first prize in the Slovak competition for the most beautiful book and promotional document about Slovakia in 2009. The book describes a unique natural reserve which contains several hundred oak trees from 200 to 400 years old. It won in the competition category of books about regions.
Slovak diplomat on Kyrgyz UN mission
SLOVAK diplomat Ján Kubiš visited Kyrgyzstan in mid April on a UN fact-finding mission to report on an uprising that has led to the overthrow of the central Asian state's government, the Reuters newswire reported.
Another deal catches EC's attention
ANOTHER closely-watched government tender in Slovakia has now caught flak from Brussels. The multi-billion-crown tender to develop a nationwide electronic road-toll collection system had already suffered two failed launches, protests by three disgruntled bidders, more than a dozen complaints filed with Slovakia’s procurement authority, and two inquiries by the European Commission, as well as protests by truckers when the system began operating on January 1.
Foreign trade increases in 2010
SLOVAKIA’s foreign trade balance continues to show a surplus. According to data released by the Statistics Office, Slovakia had a foreign trade surplus of over €67 million in February 2010, the SITA newswire reported.
Jobless rate is OECD's second highest
DATA FROM the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development show that in February 2010 Slovakia reported the second highest unemployment rate among the OECD’s member countries.
Penetration of mobile telephony services is over 104 percent
PENETRATION of mobile telephony services in Slovakia reached 104.8 percent as of late December 2009, up 3.56 percentage points on an annual basis. The three mobile operators in Slovakia, Orange Slovensko, T-Mobile Slovensko and Telefónica O2 Slovakia registered 5.659 million active SIM cards as of the end of last year, which is a net increase of 192,000 year-on-year, the SITA newswire wrote in early March.
Slovak students attend the March of the Living
ALMOST 240 students from Slovak, Czech and Hungarian secondary schools took part in the international “March of the Living” at the former Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz, Poland. By taking part in the programme the students could witness the extent of the evil and destruction committed under the influence of Nazi ideology, the SITA newswire wrote.
