Charfreitag wins hammer gold at European championships
Slovak hammer-thrower Libor Charfreitag won a gold medal at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona with a throw of 80.02 metres. Italian Nicola Vizzoni secured silver with 79.12 metres, while the bronze went to Hungarian Krisztian Pars with 79.06 metres, TASR newswire reported.
Slovak PM Iveta Radičová to speak at IPI World Congress
The International Press Institute (IPI) announced the inclusion of recently-elected Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radičová in its World Congress programme. She will be the first Slovak prime minister to attend an IPI World Congress, which, this year, will be held jointly in Vienna, Austria, and for the first time in Bratislava, Slovakia, according to an official IPI release.
Investors: Make labour code more flexible to boost employment
German investors want the Slovak Labour Code to be more flexible, Slovak-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SNOPK) spokesman Markus Halt has told TASR. To this end, SNOPK plans to submit six proposals to the Government that it would like to see incorporated into the upcoming Labour Code amendment.
Ordinary People say they are not taken seriously by SaS
The Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party says Ordinary People, the group of deputies who have made it to parliament on SaS ballot through preferential votes, are toying with the idea of establishing their own party. As Sme Daily reported, Igor Matovič, the leader of the Ordinary People (OL), has not excluded this possibility.
Cabinet approves its program
The Slovak Cabinet led by Prime Minister Iveta Radičová passed the government program statement. The document is now awaiting approval from parliament in early August. The vote in parliament will at the same time be viewed as a vote of confidence for the new government, TASR newswire wrote.
Ordinary People will support program statement, not leave SaS faction
Four parliamentary deputies from the civil association Ordinary People elected toparliament by preferential votes from the bottom of the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS)slate will support the programme statement of the new centre-right government for its four-year term, Igor Matovič of the association told SITA newswire.
Slovakia will support North-South natural gas connection
The new centre-right government wants to support construction of a north-southnatural gas connection between terminals in Croatia and Poland, as states in the government programme approved by the cabinet on July 28.
Coalition partners agree on government programme statement
After almost eight hours, the leaders of the coalition parties, Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and Most-Hid wrapped up their talks on the government program statement on July 28 morning. The partners reached agreement on all areas of the programme.
Nearly 12,000 Slovaks fell victim to cancer in 2009
Cancer claimed 11,966 lives in Slovakia in 2009, with the lung and bronchial cancer being the most common form counting 2,056 fatal cases, mostly in men. The number of cancer-related fatalities has risen long-term, representing a trend evident in most developed countries, according to the Statistics Office. Malignant tumours of the large intestine belong among the most- often diagnosed oncological diseases, claiming 951 lives in 2009. It was followed by the pancreas cancer (712 fatalities), stomach cancer (684) and cancer of the rectum (503), TASR newswire reported. In females, breast cancer is the most prevalent, killing 700 women in 2009. Women are also threatened by the cancer of the cervix (213), as well as malignant tumour of the uterus (180) and ovarian cancer (272). It is estimated that only one in five women undergo regular gynaecological examinations that can diagnose the illness early enough that it is treatable.
Miškov sets mind to improving business environment
Economy and Construction Minister Juraj Miškov has announced plans to bring about a dramatic improvement in Slovakia's business environment.
Economy minister proposes stimuli packages for two investors
Economy and Construction Minister Juraj Miškov will propose the cabinet to provide stimuli for two foreign investors. Namely, the compressor-producing Brazil-based company Embraco Slovakia, which stands ready to create 300 jobs in Spišská Nová Ves (Košice region) and the Belgian-Slovak metal processor LVD S2 that will create some 250 jobs in Revúca (Banská Bystrica region), Miškov told TASR newswire. According to Miškov, these are high-quality projects that were neglected by the former government.
King of Norway Harald V and Queen Sonja will visit Slovakia
King of Norway Harald V and Queen Sonja will come to Slovakia in October for a three-day visit. The royal couple will be received by Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič on October 26. During the first day, the royal guests are also scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Iveta Radičová and Speaker of Parliament Richard Sulik, TASR newswire reported.
Slovakia will be producing vaccines against pandemic flu
Slovakia will likely join the group of countries that produce vaccines against pandemic influenza. The State Material Reserves Administration plans to spend approximately €15 million to build a production facility for these vaccines, SITA newswire reported.
2.5-percent deficit cut for 2011
NO MIRACLES are on offer from the government of Iveta Radičová this year when it comes to trimming Slovakia’s large public finance deficit that may reach 7.5 percent of GDP. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) does not expect that Slovakia can achieve any significant deficit reduction this year but strongly recommends that the country reduce the level of its deficit by 2.5 percent of GDP in 2011.
‘Magda’ chugs again from Košice to Dobšiná
The Club of Historical Track Engines (KHKV) offered fans of railways a thrilling ride on a 60-year-old passenger train, affectionately called ‘Magda’, from the Haniska engine depot near Košice to the town of Dobšiná on July 10. During the trip passengers were able to learn about several monuments and historical attractions and the whole event had elements of tourism, ethnography and history.
Molex leaves Kechnec for good
ONE and a half years after the US company Molex which operates in the industrial park of the eastern-Slovak village of Kechnec announced mass lay-offs, the company has decided to leave the village for good, the Sme daily reported on July 21.
Postcards from Bažant Pohoda take off to the whole world
Visitors to Slovakia’s famous annual summer music festival, Bažant Pohoda, held in Trenčín had the opportunity to send specially prepared thematic postcards produced by Slovak Post that could be mailed for free anywhere in Slovakia and to addresses abroad for a small fee. Festival visitors sent almost 7,000 greetings directly from the Trenčín airport, the venue for the festival, to many locales in Slovakia and to countries such as Australia, America, Turkey, and Cyprus, with postcards most often heading for Great Britain, Poland, and the Czech Republic.
