Slovakia’s current account deficit deepens to €399.5 million after five months
Slovakia’s deficit in its balance of payments current account widened in May to €399.5 million from April’s €273.7 million, the SITA newswire reported. In a year-on-year comparison, however, this was an improvement by over €300 million from 2009.
Ryanair to offer 14 routes from Bratislava airport in winter season
Ryanair will operate 14 routes from Bratislava's Milan Rastislav Štefánik Airport (BTS) during the upcoming winter season, the TASR newswire wrote. The winter timetable will be in place from November 2010 to March 2011. Flights to Alicante and Stockholm will be maintained and the number of flights to Brussels and Dublin will be increased.

It has been discovered that a 52-year-old woman was the eighth victim of the shooting rampage in Bratislava’s suburb of Devínska Nová Ves on the morning of Monday, August 30, Slovakia’s Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic told a press conference on Monday afternoon, the TASR newswire reported.

A total of 15 people were wounded in the shooting spree in the Bratislava borough of Devínska Nová Ves on Monday, August 30, Slovakia’s Health Minister Ivan Uhliarik told a press conference, the TASR newswire reported.
European Parliament’s Buzek expresses shock and sorrow over shooting rampage
European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek on Monday, August 30, issued a statement in which he expressed his utmost sorrow and shock over the shooting rampage in Bratislava that left eight people (including the gunman) dead, Ivana Janíková-Stavrovská, the press secretary of the European Parliament's Information Office in Bratislava told the TASR newswire. “On behalf of the European Parliament, I would like to convey my sympathy to all Slovak citizens. We are expressing our sincere condolences to the families of those who were killed in the incident, and we wish the injured a speedy recovery,” said Buzek in his statement. He also gave thanks to authorities and rescue services for their efforts.

Eight people have died as a result of a shooting spree that took place in Devínska Nová Ves, a suburban district of Bratislava, on Monday morning, August 30. A gunman, aged around 50, killed seven people and wounded 15 before shooting himself after being cornered by the police.

A shooting spree in a residential area of Devínska Nová Ves in the western part of Bratislava on Monday morning August 30 has claimed six lives, the SITA newswire reported.
Eurobarometer survey finds that 62% of Slovaks believe economic reforms are necessary
Almost two-thirds (62 percent) of Slovaks think that their country must introduce reforms in order to tackle its current economic problems, according to a recent Eurobarometer survey, the TASR newswire reported. The European average for the same question was found to be higher, however, at 74 percent. At the same time, 65 percent of the people interviewed in Slovakia said that they trust EU institutions. Conversely, the figure reached only one-fifth in the United Kingdom. All in all, Europeans tend to trust European institutions more than national ones, TASR wrote.

Radičová says that SNS MP should resign over his comments on the Mafia
Opposition Slovak National Party (SNS) MP Vincent Lukáč should resign from his post of MP over his self-confessed contacts with the underworld, Prime Minister Iveta Radičová (SDKÚ) stated on Saturday, August 28, the TASR newswire reported. “I view his publicly confessed admiration for and even contacts with people whose activities may be related to organised crime as incompatible with the post of MP,” said Radičová, adding that her government, which announced a harsh battle against corruption and organised crime in its programme statement, cannot tolerate Lukáč's statements.
IBM reportedly eyeing Slovakia
SLOVAKIA is one of five potential sites being considered for a large investment project by US computer giant IBM; if it is chosen, as many as 3,000 Slovaks could get jobs as part of the project within the next three years, the Hospodárske Noviny financial daily wrote, citing an unnamed source described by the paper as ‘reliable’.

Electricity consumption in Slovakia rises
ELECTRICITY consumption in Slovakia is expected to grow over the next few years. The Ministry of Economy and Construction forecasts that power consumption will increase by more than 4 percent year-on-year in 2010 to 28.6 terrawatt hours (TWh). The improved economic situation this year affected the consumption of electricity, which went up by 4 percent from a year ago in the first four months of this year, the SITA newswire reported, citing a report compiled by the ministry.
Bratislavans requested to donate used clothing
Residents of Bratislava can help needy families in developing countries by bringing their used clothing and shoes to drop-off spots set up by the People to People project affiliated with the HUMANA international humanitarian movement. Bratislava is the first municipality in Slovakia to organise the collection effort. Special collection receptacles for textiles, clothing and shoes are now located in 22 places in Petržalka, Ružinov, Dúbravka, Záhorská Bystrica, Devín, Jarovce, and Rusovce.
Missing matter is identified by Slovak astrophysicist
Norbert Werner, a young Slovak astrophysicist working at the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford University in California, has uncovered part of the missing matter in the universe by capturing the images and spectra of a bridge of hot gas connecting two clusters of galaxies. Werner, age 29, comes from the town of Rožňava in southern Slovakia. He is one of very few researchers who have received grants from the National Aviation and Space Agency (NASA). Each year about 100 people from all over the world apply for these grants and only five are chosen, as Werner was in 2008.
Many Slovak households living on debt or savings
AS MANY as 42 percent of Slovakia’s households save regularly, around 34 percent of consumers makes ends meet financially and 23 percent take on debt or live off their savings, the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported on August 26, citing the results of a survey conducted by the Slovak Statistics Office.
