Štefánik’s life commemorated on Bradlo hill
The life of one of the most outstanding Slovaks of the 20th century, Milan Rastislav Štefánik, was celebrated on July 24, a few days after his birthday of July 21, by about 300 people who attended a ceremony held at his burial mound on Bradlo hill in Trencín Region. The astronomer, diplomat, French general, and aviator was born 130 years ago and the people commemorating his life came from all over Slovakia as well as from the Czech Republic and France.
Office space market in Bratislava is recovering
THE OFFICE space rental market in Bratislava is gradually reviving. At the end of the second quarter of this year, rented office space amounted to 1.37 million square metres in the Slovak capital. Downtown office space made up 31.6 percent of this, and the vacancy rate was 17.7 percent, according to data from commercial property and real estate services advisory firm CB Richard Ellis (CBRE), as reported by the SITA newswire.
Slovak Telekom plans to invest €15 million in new data centre
SLOVAKIA’S largest telecommunications company, Slovak Telekom (ST), has started building a new data centre in the Slovak capital. ST spokesman Andrej Gargulák told the SITA newswire that total investment in the project will exceed €15 million. The general contractor for the project is IBM Slovakia, which won the contract in a public tender. IBM has prepared a concept, structural solution, and infrastructure for the new data centre.
Bratislava shooting spree leaves eight dead and 15 injured - updated
Eight people have died as a result of a shooting spree that took place in Devínska Nová Ves, a suburban district of Bratislava, on Monday morning, August 30.
Pezinok collector opens Egyptian exhibit in Košice
An exhibition called Egypt – the Gift to Nile opened in the Slovak Technological Museum (STM) in Košice in mid August, giving visitors an opportunity to become more acquainted with one of the most significant ancient civilisations. Ján Hertlík of Pezinok, a traveller and collector, is the owner and creator of the exhibit. He told the TASR newswire that he has dedicated most of his leisure time to his biggest hobby – amateur study of Egyptology.
Tax proposals spur coalition disharmony
FINANCE Minister Ivan Mikloš and Labour Minister Jozef Mihál said they had a plan to remove what they called “unsubstantiated exemptions and other deformations” in the country’s income tax and payroll tax system. Mikloš of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) and Mihál from Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party argued that their proposed changes would bring more money into state coffers and that the level of the current budget deficit dictates an urgent need to close any loopholes that allow untaxed income to escape. But neither business leaders, nor even other political partners in the ruling coalition, seem to fully share the enthusiasm or the optimism expressed by these two government ministers.
Textile workers go on strike
EMPLOYEES of the firms Kali Agro and Slo.VI, both of which make stockings in Hencovce, eastern Slovakia, and are owned by the same Italian owner, went on strike for higher wages on August 24. The majority of the employees at the plants signed up in support of the strike. They decided to take the action because they say they are poorly paid and are dissatisfied with the outcome of collective bargaining. The average net monthly wage in the two textile companies stands at €260, which is equivalent to €320 gross, the SITA newswire wrote.
Another wall separates Roma from non-Roma in eastern Slovakia
THE WALL that now separates the mainly Roma inhabitants of a settlement next to the village of Ostrovany, near Šarišské Michaľany in eastern Slovakia, has evoked intense debate since it was built last year. But some are now suggesting that it could serve as a model for other parts of Slovakia, where similar walls may be erected to serve the same purpose: to separate the Roma from the non-Roma population.

Slovakia’s Supreme Court has released Miroslav D., who was charged with manipulation of public procurements in the Defence Ministry, from pre-trial custody, the SITA newswire reported.
Slovak President vetoes revision to Competencies Act; signs altered Penal Code
Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič vetoed an amendment made to the country’s Competencies Act on Thursday, August 26, and as a result, the re-establishment of Slovakia’s Environment Ministry will not take place unless parliament overrides the veto, the SITA newswire reported. Gašparovič recommended that lawmakers do not pass the amendment, Elena Bianchi of the President’s Office told SITA.
Strike in textile firms continues and striking women invite MPs to support them
A strike at the textile companies KALI AGRO and SLO.VI in Hencovce entered its second day and production at the facilities is at a standstill. “The strike in which 98 percent of 390 employees are involved continues. Even today, no one will work in the factory,” said Jozef Balica of the OZ KOVO trade union to the SITA newswire on the morning of August 26.

Economy Minister announces that Slovakia may attract IBM investment
The IBM company is welcome to invest in central or eastern Slovakia, the Minister Construction and Economy, Juraj Miškov, said on August 26 after meeting representatives of IBM Slovensko who told him that Slovakia was one of the five possible countries for a IBM investment in central Europe, the SITA newswire reported.

Survey: Almost one quarter of Slovak households live on debt or from savings
The results of a Slovak Statistics Office survey released on Wednesday, August 25, show that 42 percent of the country's households save regularly, around 34 percent of consumers are braking even financially, and 23 percent are living on debt or from their savings.
