The project to build a combined steam/gas cycle power plant on the premises of the oil refinery Slovnaft in Bratislava has received the go-ahead following an Environmental Impact Assessment procedure. The Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Regional Development approved its construction provided that ten recommendations are fulfilled.
Labour minister unveils payroll tax overhaul
Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Minister Jozef Mihál has unveiled a plan to change the system of social contributions including mandatory health and social insurance premiums. Its main effect will be to raise premiums for self-employed people and freelancers such as artists and journalists.
Herd of wild boars killed in road accident
Twenty-three wild boars were killed when they were hit by a single truck travelling on the R1 dual carriageway between Nitra and Trnava in western Slovakia, the SITA newswire wrote. The accident happened near the village of Pata shortly after 02:30 on Tuesday, August 24.
Slovak Defence Ministry paid for training, but can’t find proof it took place
The Defence Ministry signed contracts for lectures and consulting services between 2007 and 2010 that were worth more than Sk1 million (€33,000), but there is no proof that the services were in fact delivered, Defence Ministry spokesman Richard Šümeghy said on Tuesday, August 24.
OKS unhappy about planned changes to tax and deductions system
The Civic Conservative Party (OKS), four members of which made it into Parliament on the Most-Híd party’s slate in June, does not agree with the planned changes to the tax and deductions system announced by Labour Minister Jozef Mihál, OKS chairman Peter Zajac told the TASR newswire on Tuesday, August 24. According to Zajac, OKS would rather see reductions in public spending instead.
English instruction to be made compulsory from the third year of Slovak primary school
English will be compulsory for Slovak pupils in the third year of primary school, Education Minister Eugen Jurzyca (SDKÚ) stated during a visit of students from Comenius' Children University at the Slovak Parliament on Monday, August 23, the SITA newswire reported.
Referendum Commission holds opening session on Tuesday, August 24
The central commission for the referendum set for September 18 will hold its first session on Tuesday, August 24, Alena Koišová from the Interior Ministry's communications department told the TASR newswire. The session will see the drawing of lots to select the chair and first vice-chair. The other vice-chairs will include Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic (KDH) and Statistics Office director Ľudmila Benkovičová.
Slovakia’s governing Coalition Council to discuss proposed changes in tax laws
Proposed changes in laws concerning taxes and social and health insurance contributions are to be the subject of a meeting of party leaders of Slovakia's centre-right government scheduled for Tuesday, August 24, the SITA newswire wrote. The Coalition Council meeting will begin at 17:00. Announced changes in the unification and reduction of deductible flat expenditures, or payment of social and health insurance contributions from income earned on part-time work contracts do not have to be definite, Prime Minister Iveta Radičová said last week as reported by SITA. Paying these contributions from a share of profit remains the subject of further discussions. A large part of those who work on part-time contracts earn up to €166 monthly which is the minimum wage, according to the prime minister.
Judicial Council requests government to exempt the judiciary from 10% salary cuts
Slovakia’s Judicial Council wants the government to exempt judges and senior court officials from the planned 10-percent salary cuts because such a move would slow down trials and offer scope for corruption, said the chairman of the council, Štefan Harabin, in a statement released on Monday, August 24 and reported by the TASR newswire.
Bratislava Airport records passenger increase in June
Bratislava's M. R. Štefánik Airport (BTS) handled 244,500 passengers in July 2010, which is 7,601 more than in July 2009, when now bankrupt airline SkyEurope Airlines was still operating flights, BTS spokesperson Dana Madunická told the TASR newswire on August 23. International air transport was used by 241,087 passengers which represents an increase of 6 percent. Domestic air transport recorded a 67-percent drop in a year-on-year comparison, with 3,210 domestic passengers this year.
Alojz Hlina declares he will run for mayor of Bratislava
Entrepreneur Alojz Hlina, who became well-known after stealing the Slovak state flag from Slovak National Party (SNS) headquarters in Bratislava and engaging in various types of political protests, announced on Monday, August 23, that he will stand for the post of mayor of Bratislava at the local elections in November. Hlina said that he will launch his so-called tram campaign on August 24 in which he will spend a month travelling on public transport. In addition, he will open his election headquarters to the public on August 26.
Christian Democrats’ Hrušovský criticises method used to announce tax changes
The planned changes in the tax and deduction system announced by Finance Minister Ivan Mikloš (SDKÚ) and Labour Minister Jozef Mihál (SaS) last week will be the focus of the meeting of the four party’s Coalition Council on Tuesday, August 24, the TASR newswire reported. The joint press conference held by Mikloš and Mihál last week provoked criticism by junior coalition parties – the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and Most-Híd – as neither Mikloš and Mihál, nor their parties, had discussed the proposed measures in advance with the junior partners in the coalition.
Slovakia’s Supreme Court suspends further dumping at Pezinok landfill site
Since last week it has been illegal to dump waste at the landfill site in Pezinok after Slovakia’s Supreme Court suspended the operator’s right to continue in a ruling made on August 17, the TASR newswire was told on August 23 by Ján Man Jr., head of the board of Ekologická Skládka, the company that operates the waste disposal site. Man said that Ekologická Skládka received the ruling of the Supreme Court dated August 17, according to which the landfill site cannot continue to operate until the Supreme Court is given answers to questions concerning the legality of the site requested by the European Court of Justice.
