Slovak government to allocate €11.73 million for bilateral development aid in 2011
Slovakia will contribute more than €65.5 million for official development aid (ODA) this year, the government agreed on January 26, the TASR newswire reported. Of this amount, more than €53 million will be contributions that Slovakia makes to various international organisations, including financial institutions.
Bratislava Airport’s passenger load dropped by 3 percent in 2010
Bratislava's M.R. Štefánik Airport (BTS) handled close to 1.67 million passengers in 2010, a fall of 3 percent year-on-year, the TASR newswire reported. "Compared to previous years this is a stable figure. It shows that the market is beginning to stabilise," said BTS board chairman Maroš Jančula. Six air carriers operated flights from the airport to 42 destinations last year. Ryanair accounted for the largest share of the total, with 1.1 million passengers. London topped the list of destinations with 315,839 passengers.
Health Minister Uhliarik denies banning abortions at Bratislava University hospital
Slovakia’s Health Minister Ivan Uhliarik of the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) told journalists after the government’s cabinet meeting on January 26 that he had not issued any decree banning abortions at facilities of the Bratislava University Hospital (UNB), the TASR newswire wrote. Uhliarik also stated that the head of the hospital complex, Jozef Sabol, had also ruled out the possibility that such a decision was made by top UNB representatives.
National bank governor says Slovakia will meet Maastricht criteria in 2013 or 2014
Slovakia's fiscal consolidation programme has been functioning well so far and it can be expected that the country will meet the EU criteria of a public finance deficit under 3 percent of GDP in either 2013 or 2014, said Jozef Makúch, the governor of Slovakia's central bank (NBS) on January 26. The government's current budget plan anticipates that the deficit will shrink from last year's 8 percent to 3 percent of GDP in 2013. The governor said the NBS appreciates the public finance consolidation programme particularly because it is difficult for the four-party centre-right coalition to reach agreement on individual consolidation measures.
Slovak cabinet approves proposed amendment to citizenship law
If a Slovak citizen obtains state citizenship of another country they will no longer automatically lose their Slovak citizenship according to a proposed amendment to the State Citizenship Act approved by the Slovak government on Wednesday, January 26, the TASR newswire reported. The initiative is aimed at returning to the applicable practices used before July 2010 when the government of Robert Fico adopted legislation in response to Hungary's dual citizenship act. According to that amendment adopted in 2010 anyone applying for the citizenship of another country would automatically lose Slovak citizenship.

SLOVAKIA’S Constitutional Court has given the country two major rulings in a single day. Slovakia’s guardian of the constitution and overseer of laws enacted by parliament ruled in one of its decisions released on January 26 that legislation that prohibited private health insurers from paying dividends to their shareholders or autonomously deciding what to do with their profits violates Slovakia’s constitution.
Hospital denies political link to abortion halt
Bratislava University Hospital has rejected allegations that its new policy effectively ending abortion procedures was introduced based on a demand or call from Health Minister Ivan Uhliarik (Christian Democratic Movement (KDH)), hospital spokesperson Zuzana Čižmáriková told the TASR newswire on Tuesday, January 25. She was responding to a report published in the Pravda daily. Many KDH members have religious objections to abortion.
BVS chief Gemeran rejects responsibility for state of company
Bratislava Waterworks Company (BVS) general director Daniel Gemeran says he is not responsible for the worsening state of the company. “Responsibility lies with those who pass and carry out regulatory policies in practice,” BVS said in a press statement issued to the media on Tuesday, January 25.
