Esterházy: traitor or hero?
SCULPTURES continue to demonstrate their power in Slovakia. After the equestrian statue of Svätopluk in front of Bratislava Castle divided society a year ago, a similar situation, though on a smaller scale, has now occurred in Slovakia’s second city, Košice, where a bust of a controversial interwar politician has laid bare the division between Slovaks and Hungarians – and not only between locals in Košice, but also among historians and politicians.
Slovakia backs NATO
WHEN Prime Minister Iveta Radičová announced her support on March 10 for military intervention in Libya if the UN Security Council approved it, stating that it was the hardest political decision of her life, it was not yet clear if military action in Libya would be actually initiated. Two weeks later intervention is now a reality and Slovakia is participating in international organisations’ decision-making even though its Defence Minister says the country has little militarily to contribute at the moment.
Firms pay 'too much' for power
ELECTRICITY prices for corporate clients in Slovakia are among the highest in the EU. The end-price depends on two factors in particular – the price of electricity itself and fees and tariffs – the Financial Policy Institute, a think tank within the Finance Ministry, wrote in an analysis released in mid February.

Senior official at Interior Ministry accused of embezzlement
The Anti-Corruption Office on Wednesday, March 23, pressed charges against a senior official at the Interior Ministry and the owner of a company for embezzlement in public procurements and abuse of office, Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic informed a press conference on Thursday. The official, whose name was not revealed by Lipšic, was deputy director of the material-technological department of the Interior Ministry's economy section.
Police thwart €5-million drug deal in eastern Slovakia
The police say they have thwarted a drug deal worth more than €5 million in eastern Slovakia. During the action, they seized more than 15 kilograms of amphetamine, also known as speed, the SITA newswire wrote.
Procházka and Matovič again vote with opposition
Slovak citizens who voluntarily acquire citizenship in another country will continue to lose their Slovak citizenship, after lawmakers on Thursday, March 24, rejected a bill proposed by the opposition Smer party to amend the current law, which was itself passed by the previous, Smer-led, government.
Roma citizens allegedly offered €7 for reporting their nationality as Hungarian
Two political parties have offered Roma citizens living in Rimavská Sobota (Banská Bystrica Region) and Kráľovský Chlmec (Košice Region) money if they claim to be of Hungarian nationality in Slovakia's May census, the chairman of the Roma Union Party (SRÚ), František Tanko, alleged at a news conference in Bratislava on Thursday, March 24. He did not name the parties, but said that the price being paid was €7 per head.
Slovak MPs send bill on clean and energy-efficient cars to its second reading
The Slovak parliament moved a bill aimed at supporting use of energy-efficient and clean vehicles to its second reading on March 23, the SITA newswire wrote.
UPS Express Freight arrives in Slovakia
One of the global leaders in the delivery of consignments, parcels and letters, UPS, is ready to provide enhanced services for Slovak car producers. United Parcel Service (UPS) has added UPS Express Freight to its offerings in Slovakia, the eTREND web portal reported. “Israel and Slovakia are increasingly important players in the sphere of global trade,” UPS said in a statement. It sees potential in Israel mainly in the high-tech and industrial sectors and noted that Slovakia has developed into a key regional centre for car and industrial production with several large carmakers. UPS said these branches need services clearly defined in terms of time.
Beneficiaries of social assistance in Slovakia fall in number in February
The number of beneficiaries eligible to receive material-need benefits decreased in February for the second month in a row according to figures presented by the Labour, Social Affairs and Family Central Office which stated that 186,700 individuals received this form of social assistance in February, a decline by 3,200 from the previous month, the SITA newswire reported.
Health Minister Uhliarik says he respects doctors' protest but disputes some statements
Slovakia’s Health Minister Ivan Uhliarik said on March 23 that he understands and respects the Red and White Day of Protest organised by specialist doctors but does not agree with some of the doctors’ arguments, the TASR newswire reported. "Everybody has the right to protest. I'm sorry to say, however, that many of their statements aren't true. Our reform really isn't about privatising anything or making health care subject to payment," said Uhliarik after a government cabinet session, as quoted by TASR.
Police called to school in Prešov as pupils run riot
An incident involving more than a dozen aggressive pupils in special classes at a primary school in Prešov on Wednesday, March 23, led to three police patrol units being called, the TASR reported.
Justice minister outraged by Fico's statements
Justice Minister Lucia Žitňanská (Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ)) stated in parliament on Wednesday, March 23, that refusing to recognise a general prosecutor selected by parliament in a public vote would represent an outrageous disregard for democratic rules.
