Mikloš: State needs to commence sale of its minority share in ST
The state is planning to sell its minority share in Slovak Telekom (ST) by autumn 2012 at the latest. Gašparovič to appoint Robert Redhammer as STU Rector
President Ivan Gašparovič is set to appoint Robert Redhammer as rector of Slovak Technological University (STU) in Bratislava on March 23, Iva Šajbidorová from STU's communications department told the TASR newswire. The new head of the university was elected by its academic senate on February 14. Redhammer received 35 votes in the second round of the overall number of 42, while he would have been successful with only 22 votes.

Interior Minister Lipšic requested to report to parliament on eavesdropping allegations
Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic has been asked to inform Slovakia’s parliament about alleged eavesdropping on MPs at a session later this month, MPs in the Constitutional Committee from coalition and opposition parties agreed at a meeting on March 21, the TASR newswire reported. The exact date of Lipsic's appearance has not been set yet, committee vice-chair Edita Pfundtner told TASR. The proposal was offered by opposition Smer MP Jana Laššáková. She was backed by her party colleague Miroslav Číž who complained about receiving information on the issue from the media.
Skanska files complaint with EC over cancelled railway tender
Construction firm Skanska SK has filed a complaint with the European Commission over the decision of Slovakia’s Public Procurement Office (ÚVO) to cancel a tender for modernizing a 12-kilometre stretch of railway between Zlatovce and Trenčianska Teplá, the SITA newswire reported.
European Network Against Racism criticises Slovak government
Miroslav Lacko, the Director of the Slovak branch of the European Network Against Racism (ENAR), an international non-governmental organisation, presented the European Shadow Report 2009/2010 on March 21 reporting on its analysis of racism in Europe to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the TASR newswire reported. "The data collected by non-governmental organisations across Europe confirm that there are displays of racism in various spheres of life... They also show that extremism and racial violence are on the increase," said Lacko.
Slovakia’s February jobless rate hits post-crisis high
The official unemployment rate in Slovakia in February reached 13.16 percent, its highest post-crisis figure, the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Office (UPSVaR) announced on Monday, March 21, as reported by the TASR newswire. February's unemployment rate increased by 0.18 percentage points compared to January, TASR wrote. A total of 395,445 people were registered at labour offices in February, of which 350,969 were immediately available to begin work.
Emergency supplies for Japan to stay in Slovakia for now
Blankets, camp beds and sleeping bags destined for Japan are staying in storage in Slovakia for the time being, the TASR newswire reported on Monday, March 21 because the supplies, worth €33,000, are too heavy to be taken by air transport to Japan. "This means that of the five EU countries originally set to send humanitarian aid (Slovakia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, the Netherlands and Denmark) only two will do so – the Netherlands and Denmark," TASR was told by the Interior Ministry. The aid package will be kept in storage until transport is available.
French Ambassador visits Komárno for discussion about educational cooperation
The French Ambassador in Slovakia, Jean-Marie Bruno, visited the southern Slovak town of Komárno on March 21 and held talks on possible cooperation in science and education as well as partnerships between Slovak and French institutions, the embassy’s press attaché Didier Rogasik told the TASR newswire. Before visiting Janos Selye University, Bruno met the mayor of Komárno, Anton Marek, and other representatives of the town.
Amnesty International stages protest in front of Libyan Embassy in Bratislava
About 15 people staged a calm protest against violence in front of the Libyan Embassy in Bratislava on the afternoon of March 21 in an event organised by Amnesty International Slovensko, the TASR newswire reported. Protesters held signs and lit candles for the victims of violence in Libya. Thousands have died in the northern African country since the power struggle erupted earlier this month which subsequently has led to a NATO-led military intervention.
