ON MARCH 11 and 12, Norwegian Ambassador Trine Skymoen met people working for the pilot project Divé Maky – šanca pre rómske talenty z celého Slovenska / Wild Poppies – A chance for Roma talents from all Slovakia which has been run since 2009 by the civic association Pro Donum in the biggest Roma settlement in Slovakia, Jarovnice. She watched a performance by children involved in the project, met Jarovnice mayor Florián Giňa and also witnessed everyday life in a Roma settlement.
Nominations for third Gypsy Spirit award open today
Nominations will open for the third Gypsy Spirit award, which celebrates the work of those trying to improve the situation of Roma in Slovakia today, Friday March 18. The aim of the project is to create a public platform to recognise work within the Roma community which could also serve to motivate other entities to become involved in projects contributing to complex, effective and long-term solution of the Roma community's issues.

Štefanov claims 40 MPs are being wire-tapped
An opposition MP and former minister has claimed that the telephones of dozens of Slovak MPs are being tapped. Forty deputies from both the coalition and opposition are having their calls intercepted, and Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic (Christian Democratic Movement (KDH)) is aware of this, opposition Slovak National Party (SNS) MP Igor Štefanov told a press conference on Thursday, March 17, citing "well-informed sources" whom he refused to identify.

US-Slovak consortium supplies US Army with new helicopter simulator
US Army representatives in Trenčín on Wednesday, March 16, took delivery of a special anti-terrorist version of the Mi-17 transport helicopter simulator, a device produced by an international consortium made up of Trenčín-based company Virtual Reality Media (VRM) and American firms Fidelity Technologies Incorporated and Aeronautical Systems Engineering.

Regulator: Both Slovak nuclear plants can resist earthquakes

He added that the process – including the choice of a suitable consultant with international experience, as well as the tender to find a concessionaire – should be terminated by June 2012.
