Deadline for drawing flood-damage funds to be extended
The Environment and Finance Ministries want to modify a special system, set up last year to help municipalities affected by flooding, to allow towns and villages to continue drawing already-earmarked funds. As the rules stand, municipalities can draw the allocated €12.95 million which the Environment Ministry transferred to regional environment offices only until the end of March this year.
PAS: Entrepreneurial environment deteriorated in late 2010
The entrepreneurial environment in Slovakia deteriorated slightly in the final quarter of 2010, with the Business Environment Index (IPP) dropping 0.39 percent on the quarter to 91.5 points, thereby returning to the level seen in the second quarter of 2010, the Slovak Business Alliance (PAS) said on Tuesday, March 15.
IWCB awards honorary membership to three leading Slovak women
The International Women's Club of Bratislava, a non-profit, non-religious, non-political club made up of expatriate foreign women living in Slovakia, on March 15, awarded honorary membership to three Slovak women: Prime Minister Iveta Radičová, First Lady Silvia Gašparovičová, and Eva Dzurindová, the wife of the Foreign Affairs Minister. Radičová accepted her membership in person.

A controversial legal amendment to require that every gun-licence holder takes a mandatory psychological test at least once in their lifetime may be introduced later this year.
FNM recommends selling 100-percent stakes in heating companies
The most favourable option when privatising the six heating companies owned by the state is to sell 100-percent stakes via public tenders with international participation, the National Property Fund (FNM) has recommended in an analysis drafted in co-operation with the Economy and Finance Ministries. The document is due to be submitted to the next government session.
Jurzyca: We're looking into fees for full-time university studies
The education ministry is looking into the possibility of introducing fees for full-time university studies, said Education Minister Eugen Jurzyca (Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ)) in answer to a question posed by his predecessor, Ján Mikolaj (Slovak National Party (SNS)), at a session of the parliamentary education committee on Tuesday, March 15.
NBS posts huge loss for 2010
Slovakia's central bank, the NBS, posted a loss of more than €515 million last year, NBS spokesperson Petra Pauerová announced on Tuesday, March 15. The TASR newswire reported that Pauerová cited audited financial statements approved by the NBS Bank Board.
SE profits down 14 percent in 2010
Slovakia's dominant electricity generator Slovenské Elektrárne (SE), a daughter company of Italy’s Enel Group, posted a year-on-year slump in profits in 2010, the company announced in London on Monday, March 14.
