Police break up international people-trafficking gang
Slovak police cooperating with their counterparts from the Czech Republic say they have broken up an international organised group that had been obtaining forged documents for illegal migrants. Slovak police spokesperson Denisa Baloghová said that nine suspects aged 35 to 42 have been charged with the crime of trafficking, the SITA newswire reported. The police said that the group had earned over €180,000 from illegal activities since the beginning of this year.
Two women injured by blast in former military training area
Two women were injured in a blast that took place on Tuesday, November 8, in Javorina, a former military training area located in forested land near Levoča (Prešov Region), Defence Minister Ľubomír Galko told a press conference in Bratislava. The women, who are forest workers, suffered multiple but non-life-threatening injuries when they detonated what is believed to have been a grenade.
ECHR finds in favour of sterilised Roma woman
A Roma woman from Prešov will receive compensation of €31,000 after the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that she had been sterilised against her will 11 years ago, the SITA newswire reported.

The debt ceiling for Slovakia’s public finances should be set at 60 percent of GDP, while sanctions should be applied when it exceeds 50 percent, according to a proposal that is part of a draft constitutional law that was submitted jointly by all six parliamentary parties to MPs on November 8, the TASR newswire reported.
US thanks Slovak troops for defusing bomb-laden truck in Afghanistan
Marie L. Yovanovitch, deputy assistant secretary at the US State Department’s Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, has thanked Slovak soldiers in Afghanistan for defusing an explosive device during an unsuccessful attack by militants on an allied base in Kandahar, the TASR newswire reported on November 8.
Slovakia may lose EU structural funds due to problems uncovered in audits
Slovakia may lose the right to draw some of the money allocated to it from EU structural funds if it does not rectify problems that have been identified, the SITA newswire wrote. The European Commission raised concerns about implementation of five of Slovakia’s eleven operational programmes based on the results of recent audits.

Construction work at the Radvaň shopping centre in Banská Bystrica damaged a gas pipeline owned by the SPP gas utility but the utility’s distribution subsidiary told the SITA newswire that situation was under control around noon on November 8.

Čentéš files complaint with Constitutional Court demanding his appointment
Jozef Čentéš, who was elected by parliament as Slovakia’s General Prosecutor in summer, filed a complaint with Slovakia’s Constitutional Court on November 7 arguing that President Ivan Gašparovič should end his delay in making the official appointment, the TASR newswire reported. Čentéš was elected by parliament in June and claims in the legal action that his rights have been violated. He stated that he had asked Gašparovič for a meeting on October 19 to present his views and answer any questions the president may have but he has not heard further from the Presidential Office.
Tipos welcomes Constitutional Court ruling on Lemikon lawsuit
Slovakia’s state-owned lottery company, Tipos, welcomed the Constitutional Court’s ruling that a past verdict by the Supreme Court on the case involving Tipos and Lemikon company issued in November 2010 infringed upon Tipos's right to legal protection, its right to not have the case taken away from the initially-appointed judges and its right to a fair trial, according to a statement released to the TASR newswire on November 7 by Tipos.
Hospital transformation to be debated in parliament on November 11
The government’s process of transforming state-run hospitals into joint-stock companies is expected to be the subject of an extraordinary session of parliament on Friday, November 11, the TASR newswire wrote. The extraordinary session was proposed by Smer party which seeks to put a complete halt to the transformations. President Ivan Gašparovič announced on November 7 that the transformation of hospitals should be halted until a new government is formed after the parliamentary elections in March. Protesting doctors are not satisfied with the interim halt in the transformation of state-run hospitals into joint-stock companies and they are not withdrawing their notices of termination of their employment contracts. Marian Kollár, head of the doctors’ unions told the Sme daily that it this does not fulfil their demands and that more than 2,000 doctors still plan to end their employment contracts at the end of November.
Radičová tops opinion poll for the post of president
Interim Prime Minister Iveta Radičová would have won a presidential election if it had been held in late October, according to the results of a poll conducted by the MVK polling, the SITA newswire reported.
Sme writes that Tipos case might topple Harabin
Supreme Court President Štefan Harabin changed judges for the senate hearing the court case of Tipos vs. Lemikon and this action was at odds with Slovakia’s Constitution, the Constitutional Court stated in overruling a verdict of the Supreme Court, writing that the change in judges was purposive and the decision of the changed senate was superficial and unjust, the Sme daily reported.

President Ivan Gašparovič recommended to Health Minister Ivan Uhliarik on November 4 that he should halt the transformation of state-run hospitals into joint-stock companies, the SITA newswire reported.
