Nitran or Nitrančan
A CURIOUS petition has been launched by activists in Nitra who are seeking an official change in how they are referred to in the Slovak language. The Slovak term for a Nitra resident, as codified by the state, is ‘Nitran’ but the activists want this changed to ‘Nitrančan’. Hardly anyone from Nitra or its adjoining communities uses the official term ‘Nitran’ and young people are rather perplexed when they learn that the official word for them is not ‘Nitrančan’, wrote the TASR newswire.
Harabin trips up on Tipos case
A LEGAL dispute which has been hanging over the state-owned lottery company Tipos for over 10 years might now return to its very beginning after the Constitutional Court overturned a Supreme Court ruling in the case. As well as giving succour to Tipos, the Constitutional Court ruling could spell trouble for the president of the Supreme Court, Štefan Harabin, who might face yet another disciplinary proceeding in the light of the upper court’s finding.

Tibor Menyhart becomes new head of Anti-Monopoly Office
Environment Minister József Nagy appointed Tibor Menyhart as the new chairman of the Anti-Monopoly Office (PMÚ) on Thursday, November 10. The proposal to appoint Menyhart was agreed by the government in early October. Menyhart replaces Danica Paroulková, whose second term expired on October 25.
Slovak ambassador to Ethiopia recalled for consultations
Slovakia has recalled its ambassador to Ethiopia, Milan Dubček, Foreign Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda announced at a news conference on Thursday, November 10. He said that the Foreign Ministry had been waiting for three days for an official response from Ethiopia after it sent a diplomatic note demanding not only an explanation but also an apology for Ambassador Dubček's detention between November 5 and 7, the SITA newswire reported.
25-year sentence confirmed for murderer of ex-mayor Basternák
A man identified as Štefan Kaluz will go to prison for 25 years after his conviction and sentence for the murder of László Basternák, a former mayor of Hurbanovo, was confirmed by the Supreme Court on Thursday, November 10.
EC predicts lower growth, higher deficit for Slovakia in 2011-13
The European Commission has significantly cut its forecasts for Slovakia's economic growth in 2011 and 2012, the TASR newswire reported, citing the commission's European Economic Forecast for the 2011-13 period, which was drawn up in autumn 2011 and released on Thursday, November 10.

Employment increases in Slovak industrial sector in September
Employment rose in many of the monitored sectors of the Slovak economy on an annual basis in September 2011, with the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) reporting that the information and communication technologies sector posted the largest increase in employment at 12.9 percent, the SITA newswire reported.
Minimum salaries for nurses proposed to rise to €640 in April 2012
The minimum monthly salary for a nurse or a midwife will increase to €640 as of next April according to a legislative proposal drafted by the Health Ministry and approved by the cabinet on November 9. The new minimum salary would apply to all nurses and midwives regardless of their employer, the TASR newswire wrote, adding that the salary could be as much as €928 per month for certain specialisations.
Slovakia’s procurement authority chief to be picked by next government
The Office for Public Procurement (ÚVO) will operate without a chairperson until after the parliamentary elections next year in March and the incoming cabinet will choose the candidate, the SITA newswire wrote on November 10. The outgoing cabinet of Iveta Radičová failed to select a candidate before its collapse and it has now decided to leave the task to its successor. "With regard to the shortened electoral term and the cabinet's limited mandate, we leave the solution to the cabinet that will be formed after the elections," the press department of the Government Office stated.
No agreement between Most-Híd and SMK
The Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) has turned down an offer by coalition party Most-Híd for its members to take up places on Most-Híd's election list, the TASR newswire reported on Wednesday, November 9, citing Most-Hid campaign head László Solymos.
President Gašparovič approves cancellation of RTVS licence fees
President Ivan Gašparovič on Wednesday, November 9, approved the cancellation of the licence (concessionary) fees paid by the public to fund public-service broadcaster Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS).
Prime minister and representatives of doctors still seeking accord
More than 2,000 doctors who handed in resignation notices do not plan to withdraw them for the time being, even after more than three hours of talks with Prime Minister Iveta Radičová held on Tuesday, November 8. In fact, the doctors say they did not discuss the topic at the meeting at all. Despite that, Radičová and the doctors’ trade unions believe they will eventually find a consensus and that health-care provision will not be threatened.
Slovakia's exports increased by 9.7% year-on-year in September
Slovak exported goods worth almost €5 billion in September, 9.7 percent more than in September last year, the Statistics Office announced, as reported by the TASR newswire on Wednesday, November 9.
Industrial output in Slovakia grew 7.4 percent y-o-y in September
The growth rate of Slovak industrial production accelerated in September. The Statistics Office (ŠÚ) reported on Wednesday, November 9, that seasonally adjusted growth in industrial production in September was 7.4 percent year-on-year, while in August growth reached 4.2 percent.
SaS unable to guarantee Ordinary People's support for state budget
Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) said on Tuesday, November 8, that it cannot guarantee that three MPs within its party caucus who are members of the Ordinary People faction will support the 2012 state budget in parliament. However, all SaS’ regular MPs will certainly support the draft, Economy Minister Juraj Miškov (SaS) said at a press conference on Tuesday, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
