Thousands join Gorilla protests
VERY few anticipated that a Facebook-based initiative to protest what the organisers called high-level political corruption in Slovakia would grow into a mass rally that has caught the attention of the media as well as politicians. The success of the January 27 rally, dubbed Gorilla Protest, has led the organisers to demand that a number of politicians who are referred to – directly or indirectly – in the so-called Gorilla file exit public life. Organisers say a follow-up rally in Bratislava planned for February 3 could draw 10,000 protesters and that additional demonstrations are planned in other cities across Slovakia.
March general election could cost €8.6m
The general election on March 10 is expected to cost up to €8.6 million, the Central Electoral Commission (ÚVK) announced on Tuesday, January 31.
Smer leads latest poll, KDH second
A new party, 99 Percent – Civic Voice is on the verge on being elected to parliament, according to the latest political opinion poll. It is just 0.7 percentage points short of the 5-percent threshold needed to enter parliament. The poll was a telephone survey carried out by the Focus agency between January 20 and 27 on a sample of 1,141 respondents.
Former police officer sentenced to life for killing his lover’s husband
Bratislava I District Court has sentenced former policeman Peter V. to life imprisonment for the brutal murder by burning of his neighbour and rival in love, the SITA newswire wrote on Tuesday, January 31.
Protest organisers call on PM to dismiss Mikloš, Dzurinda and Chmel
The organisers of last week's so-called Gorilla protest are calling on Prime Minister Iveta Radičová (Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ)) to immediately dismiss Finance Minister Ivan Mikloš (SDKÚ), Foreign Affairs Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda (SDKÚ) and Deputy Prime Minister Rudolf Chmel (Most-Híd), protest organiser Lucia Gallová said at a press conference on Tuesday, January 31.
Survey finds thousands of Slovak carers working in Austria
More than 16,000 carers from Slovakia are looking after elderly people in Austria, according to a survey conducted by the Social Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) and polling company TNS Slovakia. The results also showed that the average age of Slovak female caregivers in Austria is higher than is the case for other immigrant groups, the TASR newswire reported.
Parliament to discuss lifting MPs’ immunity for misdemeanours
The proposed abolition of MPs’ immunity from punishment for minor offences is likely to dominate the last session of parliament before the March parliamentary elections, the TASR newswire reported.
MPs: SIS chief confirms flat in Vazovova Street named in Gorilla file was spied on
The director of the Slovak Information Service (SIS) intelligence agency, Karol Mitrík, reportedly confirmed to MPs sitting on the parliamentary committee for defence and security that SIS agents asked a court to authorise covert surveillance and recording as described in the so-called Gorilla file. However, he did not provide the committee with documentary evidence of the bugging, the Sme daily reported.
Private rail service between Komárno and Bratislava to commence this month
Private company RegioJet will start selling train tickets for the route Bratislava-Komárno from February 20. The initial trips will be part of a test schedule, so various reductions will be offered, the Sme daily reported.
