THE STORY of Zoltán Kohári, dubbed the Slovak Batman, has been widely publicised in global media, including Der Spiegel, the Chicago Tribune and the Reuter’s newswire, with internet hits occurring in Spain, Mexico, Venezuela, the USA, Poland and Germany. The unemployed man, aged 35, lives in an old, deserted block of flats, speaks only simple Slovak while preferring his native Hungarian tongue, and helps his neighbours in the town of Dunajská Streda in southern Slovakia while attired in a Batman outfit.

THE WORLD Press Photo (WPP) is one of the world’s top competitions for photojournalists and each year thousands of images, both global and local, vie for its awards. Shortly after the results of World Press Photo 2012 (which evaluated the press photos depicting the turbulent events of 2011) were announced in February, the preliminary round of evaluations for the next year of the competition started. On March 20 and 21, an Italian war photographer and past WPP winner, Marco Di Lauro, and a British photo editor for the Reuters newswire, Alexia Singh, visited Slovakia to judge the local entries.

Enlargements actually make the EU stronger
WITHIN the last couple of months we have taken important steps forward in relation to the EU enlargement processes in the Balkans and this is immensely important. It is an important priority of the Danish EU Presidency to create positive momentum in the Balkans. I want to highlight especially the significance of Serbia’s achievement of candidate country status at the beginning of March. This followed after it became possible to establish concrete and important agreements within the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. Thus, an entirely new foundation for progress on one of the most difficult issues in the Balkans has been laid. The cooperation and dialogue of the EU with the countries involved is a defining element in these developments.

Delete. Art and Wiping Out
THE SLOVAK National Gallery has a tradition of offering conceptual exhibitions based on abstract ideas and connections rather than focusing on a particular artist, style, or place of origin. Its exhibition in this vein for 2012 is called “Delete. Art and Wiping Out” and as its name suggests it is focused on things and notions missing or deleted rather than on those that are physically present.

The monastery in Báč
BÁČ lies on Žitný Ostrov, a river island south-east of Bratislava, close to the town of Šamorín. Today’s village came into existence after the merger of three hamlets: Svätý Jur (St George), Svätý Anton (St Anthony) and Báč. It is quite probable that it was one of the settlements constructed in this region to protect the borders of Greater Hungary.
Old Town opens a new market
BRATISLAVA’S downtown area has been losing many fresh markets and small shops. Stará tržnica (Old Market Hall) was closed for reconstruction and may never reopen as a market and another small but popular market on Žilinská Street is situated on private land and might be closed within two years. So Old Town residents, especially older citizens, have welcomed the opening of Stará tržnička, a new market at Kýčerského 8, as a convenient place to buy fresh fruits, vegetables and other foodstuffs.
