Kažimír: We won't pay IBM full sum for fiscal IT system, Slovakia was tricked
The development of the KONS information system for the Finance Administration, launched under the former government, will mean the loss of €10 million for the state, Finance Minister Peter Kažimír said at a press conference on Wednesday, August 1. In spite of this high price, it is not likely to ever be used.
Slovak athletes won three bronzes so far
SLOVAK athletes have scored three bronze medals at the 2012 Olympic Games in London so far, failing to fully meet medal expectations pinned on them. While the bronze for shooter Danka Barteková, for whom London was her first Olympics, was a positive surprise, bronze medals have left seasoned Michal Martikán and twins Pavol and Peter Hochschorner a bit disappointed. Kayaker Jana Dukátová, who also debuted at the 2012 Games, was sixth. This means that after previous Games Slovakia will return from this category without a medal.
Net profits of Slovak banks down by more than a third
Net profits in the Slovak banking sector reached €274 million in the first half of 2012, a drop of 38 percent year-on-year, according to data released by the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS), the country’s central bank, on Tuesday, July 31.
Public officials face grilling, fines for not reporting property or income
Slovak public officials are obliged to file tax and property returns, but still seem to have problems doing so. Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court Ivetta Macejková failed to include in her property declaration her income from teaching at a university. Now she will have to explain to parliament’s conflict of interest committee why she failed to do so, the Sme daily wrote on Wednesday, August 1.
Parliament elects Václav Mika to head RTVS
The Slovak Parliament on Wednesday, August 1, picked Václav Mika to head the country’s public broadcaster Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS). Mica, a former head of the private broadcaster TV Markíza, won out over ten other candidates. The winning candidate needed an absolute majority in parliament. Mica received 74 votes from the 95 MPs who took part. His nearest competitor Jaroslav Rezník, who currently heads the TASR newswire, got two votes.
Police search for woman who smashed doors at bank branch
Police are searching for an unknown woman who used a hammer to damage glass doors at a bank in Bratislava. The woman approached a bank in the district of Dúbravka on July 7. Footage from a security camera shows her taking a hammer out of a plastic bag and then pounding repeatedly on the doors with it. After a couple of seconds the woman abandoned her effort and left.
Parliament passes third energy package
MPs have approved two laws necessary for the transposition of the EU’s third energy liberalisation package into Slovakia’s legal system. If the president signs the changes they will become effective from September 1, the SITA newswire reported.
Defence Ministry plans to rent VOP premises for 20 years
Slovakia’s Defence Ministry plans to announce a new tender to rent the premises of the Vojenský Opravárenský Podnik (VOP) company based in Nováky, which mainly handles the disposal of old ammunition. The ministry has reportedly set the criteria for the tender, the SITA newswire reported.
Martikán wins his fifth Olympic medal
Slovak slalom canoeist Michal Martikán won a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics in the men’s canoe single after he fell behind his big rival – and, ultimately, the gold-medal winner – Frenchman Tony Estanguet, by 1.25 seconds. Sideris Tasiadis from Germany won silver, the TASR newswire reported.
Belizean court postpones decision on Mello’s extradition
A court in Belmopan, the capital of Belize, has postponed judgement on the extradition of Slovak fugitive Karol Mello. The judge accepted a request by Mello’s lawyer, Godfrey Smith, to allow him to read the whole file in detail, the SITA newswire wrote.
