Scores of Slovak mothers protest in front of British Embassy in Bratislava
A peaceful demonstration attended by about 150 people, mostly mothers with babies in prams and push-chairs, was held in front of the British Embassy in Bratislava in support of a Slovak woman, Ivana Boorová, who is fighting to get her children back after they were seized by social services in the United Kingdom, the TASR newswire reported on September 18.
Parliament again fails to elect Krnáč to NKÚ
Opposition nominee and former Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) MP Kamil Krnáč has again failed to be elected by MPs to serve as chair of the Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ). In a secret vote in parliament on September 18 he received only 63 votes from the 148 deputies present, the TASR newswire reported. The opposition has 67 seats in parliament, suggesting that all but four of them voted for Krnáč.
Mello case is not over for Slovakia, says Kaliňák
The case of Karol Mello, a fugitive who has been charged with having organised at least three murders in Slovakia, is not closed for the Slovak police despite the fact that the authorities in Belize have confirmed his permission to reside there, said Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák. He added that the case will end only after Mello is “handed over to justice”, the TASR newswire reported.
NBS revises its economic growth forecasts for 2012-2014
Slovakia’s economy will grow by 2.7 percent in 2012, according to the latest prognoses published by the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS), the country’s central bank. The figure is 0.2 percentage points higher than the NBS predicted in June. However, the bank simultaneously slashed its GDP growth forecast for next year from 3.1 percent to 2.0 percent,.
Slovakia will stop the import of alcohol from Czech Republic
After four people in Slovakia were poisoned – though not fatally – by doctored alcohol bought through the internet from the Czech Republic, Slovakia decided to halt the import of alcohol produced in that country.
Karol Mello gets permanent residence restored
Last month, the Belizean Immigration Department withdrew all charges against Karol Mello, the Slovak national wanted in connection with two alleged murders in Slovakia. The 7newsbelize.com website wrote that withdrawing of the charges signalled the end of the fight from the government of Belize in trying to eject Mello from the country. The web newspaper added that there was still the issue of the revocation of Mello’s permanent residency, which remained in effect and which was decided by the Minister of Immigration, Godwin Hulse.
Peter Pollák to become government proxy for minorities
Starting October 1, opposition MP Peter Pollák of Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO), who is the only Roma representative serving in the Slovak parliament, will become the new government proxy for minorities.
NGOs launch campaign to change financing of politics in Slovakia
Representatives of NGOs are calling on parliamentary political parties to fulfil their public pledge and adopt an effective law to increase supervision and transparency of the financing of political parties in Slovakia. On Tuesday, September 18, they launched a public campaign to remind politicians of their so far unfulfilled pledge. The appeal and campaign are announced by the Transparency International Slovensko(TIS), Inštitút pre ekonomické a sociálne reformy (Institute for Economic and Social Reforms-INEKO), and Inštitút pre dobre spravovanú spoločnosť (Slovak Governance Institute-SGI).
Slovakia improves its Economic Freedom Index by 0.7 points
Hong Kong still tops the Economic Freedom Network list as the country with the most economic freedom in the world, with Slovakia claiming 33rd place among the 144 monitored countries.
European Parliament’s President will visit Slovakia
President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz will arrive on Tuesday,September 18, for his first official visit to Slovakia. He will meet with President Ivan Gašparovič, Speaker of the Slovak Parliament Pavol Paška, and Prime Minister Robert Fico. Schulz will also hold talks with theSlovak Minister of Foreign Affairs Miroslav Lajčák.
Czechs and Slovaks want ancient Great Moravian sites on UNESCO list
The Slovak and Czech culture ministries on Monday, September 17, signed a joint proposal to nominate two sites of Great Moravia - the Slavonic fortified settlement in Mikulčice (Czech Republic) and the Church of St. Margaret of Antioch in Kopšany (Trnava region of Slovakia) - for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Ministry cuts Slovakia's GDP forecast to 2.1 percent in 2013
The Finance Ministry has lowered its forecast for economic growth in Slovakia next year - from the 2.6 percent estimate it made in June to the current 2.1 percent, the TASR newswire learned from the ministry's latest updated prognosis on Monday, September 17.

The State Debt and Liquidity Management Agency (ARDAL) sold four year government bonds worth €115 million on Monday, including €57 million to foreign investors, the TASR newswire was told by Juraj Pekár from ARDAL.
Increasing teachers’ salaries might be problematic, says Kažimír
Slovakia’s government will increase the salaries of teachers by 5 percent, as was promised by the previous cabinet of Iveta Radičová. Yet, the increase by 10 percent, as is proposed by the trade unions that organised a nationwide strike on Thursday, September 13, is rather problematic, said Finance Minister Peter Kažimír during a political talk show O 5 minút 12 broadcast by the Slovak Television (STV).
Slovaks are satisfied with the EU, but many do not support bailouts, survey shows
Even though Slovaks belong to the group of nations that praises their membership in the European Union the most, they are not very happy about providing financial assistance to other countries, according to the survey called ‘Trans-Atlantic Trends’, carried out by the German Marshall Fund. The main reason is because of their own poverty as well as the statements made by certain politicians, the TASR newswire reported on September 16.
Peter Mihók elected the head of World Chambers Federation
Chair of the Slovak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SOPK) Peter Mihók has become the head of the World Chambers Federation of the International Chamber of Commerce. He is the first Slovak elected to this post, the TASR newswire reported on September 14.
Four people in Slovakia poisoned with methyl alcohol
Laboratory results have confirmed poisoning with methyl alcohol in four people who drank spirits delivered from the Czech Republic. Even though the methyl alcohol has already caused the deaths of up to 20 Czechs, Slovakia is not currently considering the possibility of halting the import of the spirits from its western neighbour, the SITA newswire reported on September 17.
Best-selling car brands in Slovakia
In total, 73,938 cars were sold in Slovakia in 2011, 2,987 units more than than in 2010. Sales figures for new passenger cars and small utility vehicles up top 3.5 tonnes in 2011 by manufacturer were as follows, with the 2010 market share in brackets:
