Countrywide Events
Western SLOVAKIA
Quote of the week
“Considering the fact that unemployment has been a long-term societal problem in Slovakia it is shocking that no government has elaborated a serious analysis of its causes and therefore its possible solutions.”
Roma issue generates more heat
ANTI-RACISM activists rallied Europe-wide, from Denmark to Bulgaria, on October 7 under the “Roma Pride” banner to draw attention to hostility and discrimination against Roma people. Roma communities in Slovakia were also in the spotlight recently, but the main reason was not Roma Pride’s celebration of their culture but instead two anti-Roma marches which took place in late September. They suggested that tensions between the country’s Roma and non-Roma populations, at least in some places, need urgent attention.
Inland waterways study with OECD
THE OBJECTIVE of the Danube Axis case study is to identify opportunities for development of transportation infrastructure on the Danube water route. The project was officially launched at a seminar of the OECD about the future of port cities, which took place in Paris, where the OECD is based, on September 14, the Slovak Foreign Ministry reported on its website.
Košice to build an open cultural centre
As part of the 2013 European Capital of Culture project, a new cultural hub is to open in Košice: seven cultural institutions will be extended, modified, and interconnected, thus creating open zones without admission fees for the public. The goal is to lure visitors and offer them an open space to use, the Košice daily Korzár wrote.
Filiálka project shelved
A NEW railway line connecting Bratislava-Predmestie and Bratislava-Filiálka stations via an underground tunnel will not be built for now, the SITA newswire wrote.

OSCE high commissioner visits
PRIME Minister Robert Fico still harbours the conviction that the issue of dual Slovak-Hungarian citizenship needs to be addressed through an international agreement, despite Hungary repeatedly rejecting several Slovak proposals.
Lower toll proposed for green trucks
THE ASSOCIATION of Road Transport Operators of the Slovak Republic (ČESMAD) wants road tolls reduced for environmentally friendly trucks and increased for trucks that harm the environment. Within the changes prepared for the toll rates it proposes to offer a 25-percent discount for the most eco-friendly trucks, and to increase tolls by 25 percent for high emission trucks.
A race to the bottom
WHILE most politicians are destined to slip into political oblivion, there are always some who manage to sear their names into the long-term memory of the public by getting involved in the kind of dark or comic episodes that their more able or more honourable colleagues avoid. When foreign media outlets attempt to characterise Vladimír Mečiar, they invariably mention that he was the three-time Slovak prime minister who drove his country to the verge of international isolation in the 1990s, and during whose term the son of his arch-foe President Michal Kováč was abducted with – allegedly – the involvement of the state intelligence service.

BVS opened a revitalised garden near the Danube for public
The Bratislava Water-Management Company (BVS) offered the public a new space to relax near the Water-Management Museum: the unused company garden was revitalised for the public by the BVS and opened on September 21. This year, it will be open until the end of November.
Warehouse market showing signs of growth
OVER the last few years Slovakia has been catching up with its neighbours in the development of logistics premises and a number of modern logistics centres and warehouses have been built here. The current vacancy rate in Slovakia is low enough to encourage even speculative construction, i.e. building new premises without pre-lease contracts, by developers. On the other hand, clients are becoming more demanding and competition is growing, creating a challenge for developers and distribution space providers.
New shareholder in SkyToll
THE SLOVAK Anti-Monopoly Office (PMÚ) greenlighted the entry of Czech businessman Petr Syrovátko into SkyToll, the company operating the electronic highway toll collection system in Slovakia. Syrovátko bought a 90-percent stake in Ibertax, which is the majority shareholder of SkyToll, via his Netherlands-based company Sevenra N.V. in May. The ruling has been valid since August 13, the SITA newswire wrote.
LGBTI community gets official committee
LGBTI people living in Slovakia have recently been given reason to hope that their status in society might begin to approach the liberal-democratic standards of other European countries. For the first time in the country’s history they will have a unique body in the government to represent them and their rights. Reactions to the newly established committee, however, highlight the division in Slovak society over the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) persons.
Top logistics hall opens in Lozorno
SCHNELLECKE Logistics, provider of logistics services for carmaker Volkswagen Slovakia, opened a modern logistics hall in Lozorno on October 5. The company has invested €3.5 million in its automated storage system. Of the 850 employees of Schnellecke Logistics, 220 work in the 26,300-square-metre facility, the SITA newswire informed.

Slovakia helps launch ESM
THE EUROPEAN Stability Mechanism (ESM) may be viewed as something like a European Monetary Fund, according to Slovak Finance Minister Peter Kažimír, speaking in Luxembourg on October 8 after the inaugural meeting of the ESM, attended by 17 ministers of the eurozone.
Challenging airports
AIR transport in Slovakia is not limited to the airports in Bratislava and Košice. There are several smaller, regional airports which can handle international services. And while they are currently unable to generate enough revenue to cover their costs, their operators say their value cannot be assessed exclusively from a financial point of view as some of the wider benefits they bring are not immediately apparent from their balance sheets. For instance, they can make the regions which they serve more attractive to foreign tourists as well as businesses.
