Korean Mobis plans investment in Gbeľany near Žilina
The Korean company Mobis is planning to invest near Žilina, with the prospect of hiring 189 people. Mobis is to produce servo-mechanisms and braking systems for the nearby Kia car plant in Teplička nad Váhom.
Heavy rain caused flooding in central Slovakia, east hit by storm
Heavy and prolonged rain resulted in flooding in several municipalities of Banská Bystrica Region on Monday. Fire brigade spokesperson Erik Piater told the SITA newswire that 72 firefighters were called to help after flooding caused problems in 25 villages and towns.
Police catch four unwitting students in hunt for suspected murderer
While searching for a man suspected of murdering a couple in a boarding house in Zuberec in the Orava region, police chased a car on the D2 highway heading towards the Czech Republic.
Sme: Italian adoption agency paid Slovak officials
The Italian regional agency for interstate adoptions, A.R.A.I., financed educational projects in Slovakia for employees of orphanages, social officials and judges, with members of working groups that prepared the projects receiving some money as well, the Sme daily reported on June 22.
Council of Europe refuses Slovak nominees for ECHR judge
The parliamentary meeting of the Council of Europe was to elect a Slovak nominee to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg. However, it failed to do so, as it found none of the three candidates offered by the Slovak Judicial Council appropriate.
Skanska-Strabag: We were excluded from tender by NDS
A consortium of construction firms, Skanska and Strabag, has appealed to the National Highway Company (NDS) to reassess its decision to exclude the consortium from a tender on the construction of the D1 motorway stretch between Lietavská Lúčka and Dubná Skala in Žilina Region on Monday, June 24.
Fire breaks out at Slovnaft refinery, one person hospitalised
A fire occurred at the Bratislava-based oil refinery Slovnaft on Monday, June 24. “We started an ethylene unit, and there was a smaller fire during this start, but it was soon extinguished by our factory firemen,” Slovnaft spokesperson Anton Molnár told the TASR newswire. “We did not need any help from outside, it was just a minor accident.”
Former VSS military intelligence head and intelligence officer charged, released from custody
The former head of the Military Intelligence Service (formerly VSS, now VS) Roman Mikulec was charged by police, as was his friend, former VSS officer Katarína Svrčeková, as of Monday June 24.

The investigator of the case involving alleged tunnelling in the intelligence service has charged former head of the Military Intelligence Service Roman Mikulec and former secret service officer Katarína Svrčeková. Though the Office of the Special Prosecutor refused to reveal any further details, the two were allegedly accused of sabotage and breaching confidential information, the SITA newswire reported on June 24.
PAS: Slovak business environment continues to worsen
The quality of the business environment in Slovakia declined in the first quarter of 2013, according to the Business Environment Index prepared by the Business Alliance of Slovakia (PAS). It stood at 72.7 points, which is 3.84 percent lower than in the previous quarter, PAS informed in its press release sent to the media on June 20.
Two Slovaks believed to be among mountaineers killed in Pakistan
Several international media outlets have reported that two Slovaks might be among a group of nine mountaineers killed by the Taliban on the night between June 22 and 23 in northern Pakistan. The information was brought by Ukrainian television Svit24, referring to the head of the Ukrainian Federation of Mountaineering and Rock-climbing, Gennady Kopejka, as well as including the website International Nanga Parbat Expedition 2013 and AP newswire. The media identified the men as Peter Šperka and Anton Dobeš, the TASR newswire reported.
Police who detained Slota reprimanded for not following protocol
The police detained former chair of the Slovak National Party (SNS), Jan Slota, for drunk driving at the beginning of May. However, while he has not yet been punished for his offense, the police have reprimanded the officers who handled his case - a rank-and-file police officer and a district police director in Čadca, Milan Svitek, because they failed to inform the head of regional police headquarters in Žilina, Ivan Špánik, that they were going to release Slota, and notified him only after Slota had been released from custody, the Sme daily reported on June 22.
Financial Administration employee assisted in tax evasion
The police have detained Vladimír B., an employee of the Financial Administration, who was illegally helping companies to apply for excess VAT deductions worth nearly €400,000. Even though the police announced the arrest on June 19, the details were not provided to the press until June 21, the SITA newswire reported.
Roma say police raid was act of revenge, Sme reports
More than 30 Roma reported injuries following a police raid on June 19 of a Roma settlement in Moldava nad Bodvou, Košice Region, 15 of whom say they were beaten at the police station, the Sme daily reported on June 24.
Japanese Prince and Princess visit Bratislava
Representatives of the Japanese royal family, Prince and Princess Akishino, arrived for the official four-day visit to Slovakia. Their visit, based on the invitation of Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič, takes place on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries, the TASR newswire reported.
Bratislava parks and gardens opened in June
EVENTS in museums, galleries and even churches that allow access to areas normally closed to the public are growing in popularity. Not only are they attractive to visitors, but they are proving to be beneficial to the sites themselves. A number of parks and gardens - places typically perceived as already being open and accessible - have begun opening up to the public as well.

Slovak debt debuts on the Japanese market
FOR THE first time in its history Slovakia has sold state bonds on the Japanese market. In doing so, the country continued the diversification of its debt. In the past, Slovakia has sold bonds denominated in Swiss francs, Czech crowns ands US dollars, as well as in euros. The Slovak government said it regarded the sale of bonds in Japan as a great success, particularly in light of the fact that it was entering the Japanese market for the first time ever.
CO2 emissions quotas to be sold to Spain
SLOVAKIA is ready to sell 27 million tonnes of excess carbon dioxide emissions quotas to Spain, after the cabinet approved the sale and authorised Environment Minister Peter Žiga to represent Slovakia in the transaction on June 19, the TASR newswire reported.
Several people entered prohibited areas along Danube during floods
THREE separate instances of people entering prohibited areas along the Danube River were reported during the flooding that occurred in Bratislava in early June.
