MVK poll leaves SaS out of parliament
THE PARLIAMENTARY Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party would not make it into parliament if elections were to take place at the turn of October 2013, a recent poll has shown. On the other hand, the non-parliamentary Party of Hungarian Communities (SMK) would receive 5.5 percent, clearing the 5-percent threshold to win seats in parliament, the SITA newswire reported.

Moody’s improves Slovakia’s rating
THE MOODY’S Investors Service rating agency revised its rating for Slovakia from negative to stable on October 5. The rating, currently at the A2 level, is not expected to change in the short term, the SITA newswire reported.
641 dual citizens lost Slovak citizenship
A TOTAL of 641 people have lost Slovak citizenship under the State Citizenship Act as of October 4, 2013, with 275 of them being men and 366 women, Ivan Netik of the Interior Ministry press department confirmed to TASR.
Lajčák: Hate-fuelled anti-LGBTI campaign postpones national human rights strategy
DISCRIMINATION on the basis of sexual orientation is the second most widespread form of discrimination in Slovakia, Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák told the Pravda daily. He also gave an open account of the hate-fuelled campaign that has targeted the ministry, and admitted Slovak society might not be ready to accept wider rights for LGBTI people yet.
Jahnátek believes four retail chains are trying to discredit him
THE SMEAR campaign waged against Agriculture Minister Ľubomír Jahnátek regarding nepotism at the ministry has been orchestrated by at least four grocery retail chains that have used the services of a professional organisation to do so, Jahnátek said on TA3 news channel's show 'V politike' (In Politics) on October 6.
Slovak to top EU pharma body
SLOVAKIA’S pharmacists scored a historical success on the European level earlier this year when Štefan Krchňák, a member of the presidium of the Slovak Chamber of Pharmacists (SLeK), was elected president of the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU) for 2014, the SLeK informed in its June 21 press release.
The land of mills
MILLING has a long history in Slovakia, with significant activity recorded as early as the 13th century. Due to the abundance of rivers and streams, watermills have operated successfully here ever since. In the 19th century there were 4,800 mills in operation, the highest number at any time in the territory’s history.
Fewer Slovaks wait for surgery
THE NUMBER of patients on surgical waitlists is decreasing, along with waiting periods, according to the findings of a study revealed by the Health Policy Institute (HPI) in mid September. The HPI ascribes this development to various factors, including competition between health insurance companies and higher resources of the biggest health insurer, the state-owned Všeobecná Zdravotná Poisťovňa (VšZP), the SITA newswire wrote.
Baťa heirs seek compensation
HEIRS of Czech businessman Jan Antonín Baťa, who once oversaw the Baťa shoe company’s global empire, will seek compensation from the Slovak government for property confiscated in the wake of the Second World War as part of the infamous Beneš Decrees – assets some have valued at €1 billion.
Hospital to pay damages to patient
THE NITRA Regional Court upheld on October 2 the lower-instance court’s verdict ordering the Teaching Hospital in Nitra to pay almost €500,000 for non-material damages after a patient undergoing a common nose surgery ended up with permanent brain damage, the Sme daily reported.
Beat goes on at Bratislava percussion fest
AMID ALL manner of culture festivals in Slovakia most focus on a particular style, media or genre. But the Festival of Percussion in Bratislava in mid-October is moving to its own beat.“We wanted to show percussion and its use in various genres,” Jarmila Vlčková, the festival organiser, told The Slovak Spectator.
Over 100 swine flu cases last year
DURING the 2012-2013 flu season, 112 cases of swine flu, or A(H1N1), were recorded in Slovakia, the Public Health Authority of the Slovak Republic announced on September 23.
Parallel trade in drugs plagues Slovakia
IN MAY the State Institute for Drug Control (ŠÚKL) banned the re-export of Lyrica, a drug for treating neuropathic pain and seizures. In a pattern that has occurred several times afterwards, the ban was meant to guarantee the availability of drugs for patients in Slovakia. Pharmacists are now pushing for permanent legislation governing the re-export of certain medicines.
Traditional houses land on Košice panelák
ARTIST Tomáš Džadoň has unveiled one of the country’s most peculiar visual and architectural works in Košice, where three traditional wooden houses from Slovak villages have been placed on the top of a 13-storey communist-era pre-fabricated housing estate, often called a “panelák”.
Roma writer Ľudovít Didi has died
THE MAN who wrote “the first authentic Roma novel” in Slovakia, according to the SITA newswire, Ľudovít Didi, died on September 15, at the age of 82. Didi was born in Púchov, western Slovakia, and graduated at 32 from the Pedagogical Institute in Nitra and later, after political rehabilitation, was given his diploma from the University of Economics in Prague.
Regional election candidate lists launched
ASPIRANTS for top jobs in Slovakia’s eight regions officially called “higher territorial units”, or VÚC in the Slovak acronym, had a September 30 deadline to submit their candidate lists for the elections. Of the 66 candidates who are running for the VÚC president job only five are women. Pundits expect the most intriguing race to be in Bratislava Region, where the ruling Smer is most likely to clash with opposition-backed candidates, and which has the highest number of candidates, followed by Banská Bystrica Region, the TASR newswire reported.
Slovakia is implementing DRG
THE DRG, or the diagnosis-related group, is a reimbursement system for in-patient care that Slovakia is implementing to motivate hospitals to increase effectiveness, and which should bring more transparent distribution of sources by health insurers. Although the Health Ministry has revealed the list of over 20,000 health-care procedures, a key document for implementing the new system, there is a long way to go before the system starts working in Slovakia.
