Institute: No reason to panic about reproduction trends
Scientists from the Institute of Research of Social Communication (ÚVSK) of the Slovak Academy of Sciences concluded a poll of 1,400 people in reproductive age (i.e. between 18 and 45) and found Slovakia fares well when compared to other European countries.
Slovakia’s preliminary trade surplus in August was €261 million
Slovakia’s foreign trade ended the eighth consecutive month with a surplus. Based on preliminary data of the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ), exports in August exceeded imports by €261 million, and thus the trade surplus widened further compared to €170.9 million reported for July.
Poll: Fico both most- and least-trusted politician, again
Prime Minister Robert Fico ended up as both the most- and least-trusted politician in Slovakia in the latest poll of the MVK polling agency.

2014: Wages unfrozen; taxes change
IMPROVED tax collection, state administration reform and measures to support economic growth will lead the government to unfreeze salaries of approximately 340,000 public servants, keep the public finance deficit under 3 percent as required by the European Union and possibly slash corporate income taxes from 23 to 22 percent, according to government plans for 2014 and beyond.

Czechs are the most prosecuted foreigners in Slovakia
CITIZENS of Slovakia’s neighbouring countries top the list of foreigners who are most often subject to criminal prosecution in Slovakia. In 2012, Czech citizens were the most prosecuted foreign nationals in Slovakia, with 326 of them facing prosecution, the TASR newswire reported from the report on the activities of the prosecution for 2012.
Ministry backtracks compensation for tourists from non-visa-exempt states
THE TRANSPORT Ministry has, for now, abandoned its plan to provide partial compensation for accommodation facilities to visitors from countries that require visas to enter Slovakia, the TASR newswire reported.
Hospitals administered by regions get worst marks
PATIENTS are least satisfied with the services in small hospitals administered by the self-governing regions, according to a survey conducted by the state-run health insurer, Všeobecná Zdravotná Poisťovňa (VšZP).

Slovalco has signed a long-term electricity supply contract with power utility Slovenské Elektrárne (SE).
Public broadcasting council issues fines over advertising
The Council for Broadcasting and Retransmission, which is tasked with monitoring public broadcasting, gave fines amounting to thousands of euros at its October 8 session. In total, four financial fines and six warnings fines were imposed to Slovak broadcasters and retransmission operators.
Poll: Fico would meet Procházka in presidential second round vote
Still clearly on top with 37.9-percent support, Prime Minister Robert Fico would have win the first round of a presidential election if it were held today, according to the latest poll carried out by the MVK agency between September 26 and October 2 on a representative sample of 1,078 respondents. Advancing to the second round of the vote, Fico would have to face Christian Democratic Movement(KDH) defector and now independent MP Radoslav Procházka who was backed by 18.1 percent of respondents, the TASR newswire quoted the poll. Next came KDH MP Pavol Hrušovský (with 17.6 percent), philanthropist and former businessman Andrej Kiska (13.2 percent), former KDH chair Ján Čarnogurský (8.9 percent) and Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) MP Peter Osuský on 4.4 percent. Meanwhile, as many as 26.2 percent of all the respondents wouldn’t have gone to polling stations or couldn’t decide as to who to vote for.
Union and state agree to increase salaries for public workers
After three rounds of failed negotiations, state representatives agreed with trade unions on an increase of base salaries for state and public-administration employees during the evening of October 8.
Slovak Tourist Board to promote Slovakia in Poland and UK
THE SLOVAK Tourist Board (SACR) is launching a campaign with a video promoting Slovakia as an attractive year-round destination. The short advertisement, entitled “Slovakia. Best friends forever”, will be broadcast on YouTube in Poland and the United Kingdom, the TASR newswire reported on October 7.
Social partners discuss pay raise for state employees
REPRESENTATIVES of trade unions and the Labour Ministry have failed to agree on the amount by which the salaries of people working in state and public administrations will increase next year. While the ministry proposes a 1.7-percent increase, which amounts to €13 or €13.5 per month, the trade union proposes a rise at 4.2 percent, the SITA newswire reported on October 7.
Constitutional Court cancels hearing over Čentéš’ complaint
THE CONSTITUTIONAL Court will not deal with the complaint Jozef Čentéš submitted on November 7, 2011 over the violation of his fundamental rights when he was prevented from taking up the office of general prosecutor even after being legally elected to the post by parliament on June 17, 2011. Though the proceeding was scheduled for October 10, the court had to cancel it due to the objection it received from President Ivan Gašparovič, the SITA newswire reported on October 8.

ONLY a few days after the police stopped the investigation into alleged blackmail connected with the privatisation of the Bratislava airport, the prosecutor will halt another case mentioned in the Gorilla file.
Prosecutor’s office will publish dates of disciplinary proceedings
PEOPLE will now be able to learn about the dates of disciplinary commission meetings as they will be published on the website of the Office of the General Prosecutor. Deputy General Prosecutor René Vanek made the decision after the Sme daily reported in its October 7 issue that it is nearly impossible for ordinary people to exercise their right to attend the sessions because they are not published.
Prosecution over murky intercountry adoptions started
THE POLICE have launched a criminal prosecution over abuse of powers by public officials and child trafficking on June 25 in a case pertaining to intercountry adoptions. The prosecutor heard the first witness on October 1, the SITA newswire reported.
