First university's rocky start

THE FOUNDING of Czechoslovakia in 1918 caught the young republic – especially the Slovak half – unprepared in many ways. For example, college education in Slovakia had to be built up from scratch. The first Slovak university was founded in 1919 in Bratislava, bearing the name of Ján Amos Komenský.Located at the site of a former Hungarian university, this new university was home to four schools: law, medicine, natural sciences and philosophy. With Slovakia’s acute lack of intelligentsia, the establishment of these faculties was necessary. For example, the law school had to educate new students in all branches of state administration to replace the old clerical workers, while the philosophy faculty had to build a foundation for academia within Slovak culture.

Cipár: The Blue (tempera, 1980)

UPDATED: GMB examines Cipár's work

THOUGH Miroslav Cipár is a renowned Slovak illustrator and graphic artist, the Bratislava City Gallery (GMB) is focusing on another aspect of his work: dozens of the artist’s paintings, as well as objects and assemblages, are currently exhibited in 11 rooms of the gallery’s Pálffy Palace.Miroslav Cipár, 78, began painting more seriously in the mid 1960s, but after an exhibition in the GMB in 1966, which he thought to be unpleasant and hastily prepared, he donated most of those works and painted over the rest of them. Repainting his own older works, and also using and recycling everyday items have remained dominant themes in his work, GMB head Ivan Jančár wrote in the accompanying text.

Then, when a journalist from a different newspaper repeated the question, Fico recommended they inquire at the Office of the General Prosecutor.
