Procházka explains discrepancies in presidential campaign financing
ORDINARY People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) chairman Igor Matovič said on June 2 that chairman of the new party Sieť (Network) and unsuccessful presidential candidate Radoslav Procházka attempted to purchase campaign ads under the counter in an advertisement newspaper published by Matovič’s family. OĽaNO specified that Procházka approached him in a private conversation, suggesting that he should pay 50-90 percent of the total sum for the desired service in cash without a receipt.
V4 defence ministers: Ukraine could join V4 Battle Group
UKRAINE could be part of the Battle Group task force slated for launch in 2016 by the armies of the Visegrad Four (V4) countries (Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic), the V4 defence ministers said on June 3 at a session ahead of the official meeting of defence ministers of NATO-member states in Brussels.
Disputed revision to constitution sails through parliament
BORN from a peculiar union between the ruling Smer and the opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), a revision to the country’s constitution sailed through parliament on June 4, defining marriage as a “unique bond between a man and a woman” and introducing the ruling party’s remedies for the judiciary, including the disputed clearances for judges.
Court upholds punishments for EU flag burning
A THREE-member senate of the Bratislava Regional Court has sentenced Marián Mišún and Štefan Potocký to pay fines of €300 and €500, respectively, for burning a European Union flag back in November 2012. If they fail to pay the fine, they will go to prison, the TASR newswire reported on June 3.
No one charged in bar brawl case yet
AFTER TWO weeks police have still not charged anyone in the case of a fight that broke out in the Prezidentka bar in Bratislava. According to witnesses, the fight was provoked by the head of the Presidential Office’s public relations division, Dárius Rusnák, the Sme daily reported in its June 3 issue.
New mining rules passed
AS OF June 15 the mining of radioactive materials will be allowed only if people living in an affected area approve it in a referendum. This stems from an amendment to the geological act passed in parliament on June 3.
Justice Ministry to extradite Chechen refugee
JUSTICE Minister Tomáš Borec has approved the extradition of Chechen refugee Anzor Ch. to the Russian Federation, the SITA newswire reported on June 2. Russia asked for his extradition, together with Ali I., as they are suspected of banditry during the war in Chechnya.
Mobile operators paid for frequencies
FOUR mobile operators – Orange Slovensko, Slovak Telekom, SWAN and Telefónica Slovakia – paid the second half of the one-off payment at €81.94 million for frequencies. They can now use the frequency in the bands 800 MHz and 1,800 MHz, which they received via an electronic auction, the SITA newswire reported on June 2.
State budget deficit at €1.879 billion in May
SLOVAKIA’S state budget deficit at the end of May 2014 was €1.879 billion. In a monthly comparison it thus grew by €363 million, and compared with May last year it increased by more than €277 million, data released by the Finance Ministry show, as reported by the SITA newswire.
Almost half of Slovaks say they would work illegally
AS MANY as 47 percent of people in Slovakia are prepared to be employed illegally, according to a survey carried out by the Focus polling agency on behalf of the Profesia.sk job portal.
Procházka faces more non-transparency claims over campaign

Tax evasion worth €9.5 million uncovered
SLOVAK law-enforcement forces known as 'tax cobra' have uncovered a tax evasion case concerning the import of mineral oil from Poland, which cost the state at least €9.5 million, head of the Financial Directorate Frantisek Imrecze revealed at a press conference on June 2, as reported by the TASR newswire.

Kňažko running for mayor of Bratislava
