A 66-YEAR-OLD man from Prešov faces charges of robbery after attacking a pair of young ice cream vendors.
Bratislava hospital project moves ahead
AFTER Slovakia failed to complete Rázsochy, a state-of-the-art medical facility in Bratislava whose construction was launched during the communist regime in the 1980s, the Robert Fico government is working on a new mega health-care project with a price tag of about €250 million. The plan is to build and operate a hospital via the public–private partnership (PPP) scheme. The feasibility study postpones the project’s planned completion until 2017.
Slovakia’s third red-footed falcon couple spotted near Trnava
A NEW red-footed falcon couple – a bird species that was practically extinct in Slovakia – was seen nesting near Trnava for the first time in 40 years. This is the third such couple currently known to exist in the country. “A colleague who lives in that area notified us of a red-footed falcon couple living there, and subsequently spotted a male bird there,” Jozef Chavko of the Raptor Protection of Slovakia (RPS) organisation told the TASR newswire in mid June. “We went to check the area and after two days, we saw a lovely couple of this precious gem of Slovak nature in an abandoned magpie nest. I watched with bated breath at how the male brought food to the female, who, judging by how she was acting, had only been roosting for a few days.”
Slovakia sticks to nuclear energy
WHILE gas disputes between Ukraine and Russia resonated at Bratislava’s session of the European Nuclear Energy Forum, Prime Minister Robert Fico confirmed Slovakia’s long-term support for nuclear energy.
Chamber Opera returns to Bratislava
CHAMBER OPERA has returned to Bratislava this spring, a format which is common throughout Europe, but has been absent in Slovakia’s capital for 15 years.
Slovaks drink 13 litres of alcohol a year
SLOVAKS are among the most avid alcohol drinkers in Europe. Each local over 15 years of age drinks 13 litres of pure alcohol a year on average, while the global average is 6.2 litres. This stems from a recent World Health Organisation (WHO) report.

Volunteers team up
MORE than 6,600 volunteers in 14 towns and cities across Slovakia combined as part of Our Town, or Naše Mesto, the biggest corporate volunteering event in Slovakia on June 13-14. Participating in around 500 public benefit activities, they improved public and school places or devoted their time to seniors or the disabled.
Alleged Neo-Nazi musician acquitted
ACTOR Rastislav Rogel who is former leader of the bands Krátky Proces and Juden Mord, playing music previously investigated in connection to Neo-Nazi extremist, has been acquitted in an alleged attack at the Bratislava-based Obluda club in 2008.
V4 armies to train together in Slovakia
ABOUT 1,300 Slovak and Czech soldiers together with 1,200 Hungarian and Polish are slated to participate in the Ground Pepper 2014 military training as a reaction to the developments in Ukraine.
More charged for Mariatchi bar attacks than previously thought
PROSECUTORS have charged another person in a New Year’s beating attack at the Mariatchi bar in downtown Nitra, brining the total number of people accused in two separate incidents to nine, the daily Sme reported.
Unemployment rate falls slightly
UNEMPLOYMENT reached 12.8 percent in May 2014 which is 0.16 percentage points lower than unemployment rate in April and 1.46-percentage point decrease year on year, the Central Office of Labour said on June 20.

Explosion rocks railway station restaurant in Čierny Balog
The restaurant in the Čierny Balog railway station, in the Upper-Hron region in central Slovakia, was rocked by an explosion June 19, Bernadetta Múdra of the communication department of Fire- and Rescue Corps’ Presidium informed the TASR newswire.
Gašparovič shortened sentence of ice-hockey player Koleno
Before leaving the office on June 15, former president Ivan Gašparovič managed to reduce the jail sentence of young ice-hockey player František Koleno who for attacking a female police officer was sentenced to eight years in prison last year.
Last troop rotation to Afghanistan
AFTER 12 years of Slovak participation in ISAF operation in Afghanistan the last rotation of 301 Slovak soldiers including nine members of steering group travels to the country June 19.
Mikuš resigns from SDKÚ vice-chairman post
Jozef Mikuš resigned on the position of opposition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) deputy chairman on June 19. The three remaining vice-chairs (Ivan Štefanec, Martin Fedor and Viliam Novotný) remain in their posts for now.

Pyrotechnist Miroslav Staník who was in the Slovak unit targeted by a rogue Afghan security staffer in Kandahar in July 2013 was awarded the Military Deed of the Year on June 18 by Defence Minister Martin Glváč.
RAF unveils memorial plaque to Slovak and Czech Aviators in Bratislava
A commemorative plaque in honour of Slovak and Czech aviators who served in the British Royal Air Force during World War II was unveiled at Milan Rastislav Štefánik Square in Bratislava on June 18. The plaque was sponsored by the British communities living in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
