Chren files motion against Land Transfer Act
Independent MP Martin Chren (NOVA) has filed a motion at the Constitutional Court on July 2 over a law in May concerning the sale of agricultural land. The motion has been signed by 33 Opposition MPs.
Eustream says several suppliers interested in providing reverse-flow gas to Ukraine
The Slovak natural gas transport company Eustream has concluded the evaluation of the Open Season procedure, gauging interest from suppliers interested in selling gas to Ukraine via the Vojany-Uzhgorod pipeline. Several clients showed interest, spokesperson Vahram Chuguryan told the TASR newswire on July 2.

A nearly decade long legal tug of war has resulted in a draw as both Slovaks and Hungarians can now label wines as “Tokaj”. The struggle makes sense when one considers the sweet wine’s global reputation. Louis XIV himself once declared Tokaj to be “The king of wines and the wine of kings”.

Smer to finalise personnel audit by July 8
REPRESENTATIVES of the ruling Smer party who have failed in their posts should be removed and replaced by new nominees. Prime Minister Robert Fico announced during the party’s June 28 working congress that he wants such changes.

TWO ministers are leaving the cabinet of the one-party government of Smer. Education Minister Dušan Čaplovič and Economy Minister Tomáš Malatinský resigned after today’s cabinet session.
Finance Ministry: Budget deficit of €1.97 billion in June
Slovakia’s state budget at the end of June posted a deficit of €1.97 billion, an increase of 18.3 percent year-on-year.
Kiska presents Ashton with high Slovak state award
During her visit to Slovakia, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton was awarded with the Order of the White Double Barred Cross Second Class by President Andrej Kiska on July 1. This was the first state award presented by Kiska since he assumed the office of president in mid-June.

Kaník unanimously elected as SDKÚ caucus leader
THE SLOVAK Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) caucus will now be headed by Ľudovít Kaník, who was elected unanimously by the party’s caucus members, SDKÚ chairman Pavol Frešo announced on June 27.

A DECREASING number of voters prefer the ruling Smer, while the new Sieť party, founded by unsuccessful presidential candidate Radoslav Procházka, continues to gain ground.
Most Slovaks earn less than average salary
NEARLY as many as two thirds of employees in Slovakia earned less than the national average salary in 2013. However, this number was down by 1.39 percentage points compared to 2012.
Economic sentiment in Slovakia improving
ECONOMIC sentiment in Slovakia continued to improve in June. The three-month moving average of the economic sentiment indicator increased in June by 1.7 points to 100.7 points. Its current value exceeds the level of the same period of last year by 10 points, but it still lags behind the long-term average by 3.8 points, the SITA newswire reported.
State-run company loses to Penta, has to pay €26 million
THE STATE-RUN heat distribution company Bratislavská Teplárenská (BTS), which made a profit of less than €200,000 last year, will have to pay €26 million to the Penta financial group after losing a 12-year-old dispute on June 30.
