Economic sentiment up again
THE ECONOMIC sentiment indicator (ESI) has continued to rise in July, with its three-month moving average increased by 2 points to 102.8. This followed on improved confidence in all sectors, except for trade. The ESI is 13.3 points higher than last year, but still lags behind its long-term average by 1.7 points.
Commercial banks analysts expect growth at 2.5 percent
SLOVAKIA’S economy will grow at 2.5 percent this year, according to the analysts with the commercial banks who attended regular survey carried out by the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS). Their expectation did not change compared to last month, nor did the prediction for 2015 when they expect the economy to grow by 3.1 percent, the SITA newswire reported on July 28.

Pollák calls on Slovaks to remember Roma holocaust
THE HOLOCAUST of Roma, or Poraimos, as it is known among the Roma, should not become a forgotten chapter in Slovakia’s history, government’s proxy for Roma communities Peter Pollák told the SITA newswire as he called on municipalities, NGOs, churches and community centres around Slovakia to remember the Roma victims of Nazism.
Poprad-Luton airline to be resumed this autumn
PASSENGERS from northern Slovakia will be able to fly to the UK regularly, with a service connecting Poprad, in the Prešov region, with London’s Luton airport to be relaunched on October 28, the TASR newswire reported.
Occurrence of sexually-transmitted diseases drops, except gonorrhea
IN 2013, doctors registered 1,055 cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) in Slovakia, amounting to a year-on-year drop of 87 cases, the TASR newswire reported, citing the figures published on July 28 by the National Centre for Medical Information (NCZI).
Government approves €3 million for Vrátna Dolina relief
THE NORTHERN-SLOVAK areas of Terchová and Vrátna dolina will receive a €3-million financial aid from the state to spend on relief work after last week’s landslides and torrential rains.
Three of four men charged with Sýkora’s murder freed from custody
THREE men who faced charges in the case of the murder of mafia boss Miroslav Sýkora have been released from custody following a procedural error, the TASR newswire reported on July 27, citing the Nový Čas tabloid daily.

Tradition of English Fridays
THE THIRD chief of the general staff of the Slovak Armed Forces, Milan Maxim has continued the tradition of the so-called English Fridays introduced by the former chief of the general staff Ľubomír Bulík. On Fridays all official meetings are held in English, the main working language of NATO.

VIA IURIS, a judicial watchdog group, conducted a study last year in which it found that as many as 30 percent of newly-appointed judges have close family ties with incumbent judges or court employees.
Globe tour reaches Bratislava
THE FAMOUS Shakespeare’s Globe theatre embarked on a world tour in spring (marking the anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth in April), visiting 205 countries worldwide. The show made its 27th stop at Bratislava’s Slovak National Theatre (SND) on June 24.
Unemployment drops slightly in Jun
DESPITE an influx of graduates in the labour offices, the jobless rate dropped in June, though only slightly. Observers predict that it will continue to decrease and by the end of the year it may stand at 12 percent.

WHILE the United Kingdom is already a significant trade and investment partner of Slovakia, both sides continue to further intensify bilateral economic relations. Storm, mudslides wreak havoc in Terchová
HEAVY storms on the evening of July 21 caused flooding which destroyed dozens of cars and the road leading from Terchová village to the Vrátna Dolina, a valley in the Malá Fatra mountains. The nearby city of Žilina had problems with torrential rain, reporting flooded cellars, roads and pavement.
Bridging nations
A RECENT exhibition in the Nitra Gallery presents the works of Slovak, Czech and Scottish artists. The full name is Nové Mosty (New Bridges) 11:11 and it is comprised of works by 11 Slovak and Czech artists and 11 Scottish ones.
