Ukrainian urban climber “Mustang Wanted” scales SNP bridge
Mustang Wanted, a so-called urban climber from Ukraine visited recently Slovakia. After attending the Outbreak Europe international festival in Banská Bystrica and having mastered the local building of the shopping centre Europa, he also came to Bratislava to climb the UFO observatory tower on the SNP Bridge.
Too much biowaste ends up in landfills
THOUGH Slovakia manage to cut the amount of the biowaste by one-quarter from 2010, it failed to meet its another commitment within the European Union’s landfill directive: to halve the volume of biowaste that ends up in landfill sites between 1995 and 2013, Environment Ministry Senior Advisor Maroš Záhorský told the press on August 6.
ÚVO orders to return the cheapest bid
THE PUBLIC Procurement Office (ÚVO) has objected to the decision of the National Highway Company (NDS) to exclude the three cheapest bids in the competition over supervising construction of the cross-country D1 northern section, TV Markíza reported on August 6.
SPPK does not fear Russian ban on food imports
WHILE some farmers say the limitations Russia passed in response to the third round of sanctions issued by the European Union and the US will not significantly affect the Slovak market, others warn that mostly retailers and businesspeople will be affected, the Sme.sk website reported on August 6.
Banks spent €4 million on non-profit projects
BANKS active in Slovakia spent more than €4 million to support non-profit initiatives last year, with the bulk of the funding flowing to support arts and culture, education, science, sports, charity projects, social assistance and health care, the TASR newswire reported.
Slovakia to feel sanctions
RUSSIA responded to recent sanctions, the toughest imposed on the country by European Union and the United States since the Cold War, with a one-year embargo on food imports from the EU, the US, Australia, Canada and Norway on August 7.

S&P revises Eximbanka’s rating
STANDARD & Poor’s Rating Services (S&P) has confirmed the long and short-term foreign and local currency issuer credit ratings of the Export-Import Bank of the Slovak Republic, Eximbanka SR, at A/A-1. The rating agency also revised its outlook for the bank from stable to positive, the SITA newswire reported on August 6.
Lukoil sells petrol stations to unknown Hungarian firm
PETROL stations operated in Slovakia by Russian firm Lukoil will change hands. The company announced it signed an agreement with Hungarian company Norm Benzinkút Kft. Lukoil’s petrol stations in the Czech Republic will be operated by Hungarian oil and gas group MOL.
SIS warns against travelling in eastern and southern Ukraine
THE SLOVAK Information Service (SIS) intelligence agency has issued a warning for Slovaks against travelling to the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine, the TASR newswire reported on August 6.
Kiska has lunch in reform school
PRESIDENT Andrej Kiska had lunch at a reform school in Hlohovec with Ombudswoman Jana Dubovcová, the centre’s director Viktor Vicen and four pupils on August 5. The lunch took place following the ombudswoman’s recent findings regarding the lack of money allocated for food in such facilities, the TASR newswire reported.
Shoot-out in Liptovský Mikuláš leaves a policeman injured
Shooting could be heard on July 5 in the streets of Liptovský Mikuláš and one policeman was injured, according to the Čas.sk website. The confrontation came as they detained a former policeman, Ján A, over alleged robbery.

After a call by Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry, Slovak nationals have fled Libya, where fighting between enemy militias has escalated in recent weeks.
Slovak missionaries robbed in Honduras
Slovak Catholic missionaries in Honduras were robbed by three unknown perpetrators by the end of July. They were robbed of 150,000 Honduras lempiras (some USD 10,000) that were to be used to construct the Chapel of the Lord’s Mercy, the press department of the Conference of Bishops of Slovakia (KBS) informed on August 5. The missionaries were robbed three minutes after they withdrew the money from the bank, the Sme daily wrote.

Political lobbying should get clear rules, according to NOVA MPs who plan to file a draft law on lobbying in parliament in September, the SITA newswire wrote.

THE SEVERE thunderstorm that swept across Bratislava on August 3 caused damage to property worth hundreds of thousands of euros, insurance companies active in Slovakia informed.

THE NOVEMBER 15 municipal elections will cost about €9.89 million, according to a proposal the Interior Ministry submitted to interdepartmental review, the SITA newswire reported on August 15.
Towns to prepare to deal with immigrants
THE ASSOCIATION of Towns and Villages of Slovakia (ZMOS) believes that local governments are underestimating the issue of immigration and the problems immigrants encounter when integrating into society. To address the problem, ZMOS has launched a project to help integrate foreigners into local communities. It will be funded from the European Fund for the Integration of non-EU Immigrants, the TASR newswire reported on August 4.
