Fico and Yatsenyuk open reverse gas flow pipe
The reverse gas flow pipeline from Slovakia to Ukraine was ceremonially opened by, Robert Fico and Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the respective prime ministers of Slovakia and Ukraine, and European Commission representative Klaus-Dieter Borchardt in Veľké Kapušany on September 2.
CEPI: Slovakia’s attitudes made it a second-class member in NATO
Individual member states should present clear attitudes at the upcoming NATO summit in Wales, while the current Slovak stances are unreadable, analyst of Central European Policy Institute (CEPI) Marian Majer said at a press conference on September 2 in Bratislava. He continued to say that he expects from President Andrej Kiska, who will represent Slovakia at the summit to confirm the trans-Atlantic message of his inauguration speech in June.
Banská Bystrica mayor, councillors takes action against Kotleba banner
Banská Bystrica regional governor Marian Kotleba on the public holiday marking the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) on August 29 displayed a “Stop NATO! Yankees Go Home!” banner on the façade of the regional authority building. The Banská Bystrica city hall and members of the regional parliament on September 2 condemned this move.
Poll shows voter preference for Sieť down
A RECENT poll carried out by the Polis polling agency showed that voter support for the right-wing Sieť party dropped when compared to the previous month. According to the survey, carried out in late August, the party’s preferences stood only at 12.4 percent, down by 4 percent compared to July, the SITA newswire reported on September 2.
Football match organised in Moldava in lieu of festival
DESPITE the decision to cancel the Moldava spolu (Moldava Together) festival in Moldava nad Bodvou, Košice Region, scheduled for August 29, the organisers came to the local Roma Budulovská settlement and played a game of football with its residents.
State officials congratulate Kiska on Constitution Day
A NUMBER of statesmen and representatives of royal families greeted President Andrej Kiska on the occasion of Slovakia’s Constitution Day on September 1. Among them were US President Barack Obama, German President Joachim Gauck, Czech President Miloš Zeman, Croatian President Ivo Josipović and Belgian King Philippe.
Entrepreneurs still dissatisfied with Slovakia’s business environment
THE PACE of the downturn in the quality of the business environment in Slovakia slowed down markedly in the second quarter of this year, according to evaluations from entrepreneurs, head of the Business Alliance of Slovakia (PAS) Róbert Kičina said on August 28.
Summer holiday ends; school system introduces changes
MORE than 3,300 elementary and secondary schools are opening their doors for around 702,000 students on September 2. The new school year is marked by several changes, including entrance exams for secondary schools, a date for national testing in maths and Slovak, and rules related to social scholarships.

Finance Ministry does not factor Ombudswoman’s budget priorities
OMBUDSWOMAN Jana Dubovcová prepared three budget priorities for next year but the Finance Ministry granted them no funds in its draft bill for the 2015 state budget. Dubovcová said the budget was so low that it could effectively eliminate her department, pointing out that the office has never been fully staffed or equipped.
