Most Slovaks feel living standards are stagnating or declining
MORE than 40 percent of Slovaks consider their living standard to be decreasing while 46.7 of them think that their standard of living remains the same. A majority say they have not been or do not plan to go on vacation this year, according to Polis polling agency.
Euthanasia okay, according to most of Slovaks
NEARLY 59 percent of people in Slovakia think it is important to deal with the issue of euthanasia, according to a survey carried out by Focus agency on behalf of the liberal Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party.
Number of unemployed falls for third consecutive quarter
Unemployment fell year-on-year in 2Q14, the third such drop in a row, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) announced September 3. Going down by 6.2 percent y-o-y, the number of unemployed people in the second quarter of this year stood at 356,400. At the same time, the unemployment rate decreased by 0.8 p.p. y-o-y to 13.2 percent.
Alliance for Family claims Kiska broke promise by sending petition to Constitutional Court
President Andrej Kiska by asking the Constitutional Court to look into the proposal of a referendum on protecting the traditional family has broken his promise given before he was elected, the Alliance for Family (AZR) spokesman Andrej Chromík said September 3.
Kiska: Slovakia to state clear stances at NATO summit
Slovakia will pledge to increase its defence budget to 1.6 percent of GDP by 2020 at the Newport NATO summit (September 4-5), President Andrej Kiska told journalists before leaving for the summit on September 3. He also stated that Slovakia will state clear positions on all fundamental issues.

Government silent over Russia sanctions

Statistics Office confirms 2.5 percent growth in Q2
SLOVAKIA’S economy grew by 2.5 percent in the second quarter of 2014, which is by 1.7 percentage points better compared to last year. In quarter-on-quarter comparison the GDP grew by 0.6 percent, according to the detailed information about the economic growth published by the Statistics Office (ŠÚ) on September 3.

State budget posted €2.42 billion deficit in August
The state budget posted a deficit of €2.42 billion, up 26.2 percent year-on-year, as of August 31, the Finance Ministry announced on September 2. The state income went up by €240.4 million y-o-y, while expenditures increased by €743.4 million y-o-y.
