Foreign trade surplus was €232.8 million over August

Slovakia’s surplus in foreign trade stood at €232.8 million in August of thisyear, based on preliminary data published by the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ). Exports in August reached €4.679 billion on a y-o-y drop of 2.4 percent. Imports in the eighth month came down 3.1 percent to €4.446 billion, the SITA newswire quoted the ŠÚ.

Kiska to leave for Leipzig for V4-German meeting

President Andrej Kiska has left for a German trip on October 9, invited by his counterpart Joachim Gauck. Government forgives Žilina’s €17.5 million debt

THE GOVERNMENT adopted a resolution at its session held in Žilina on October 8 which forgives the city of Žilina of a debt at €17.5 million it took for building a Korean village in Krasňany. The town failed to sell seven blocks of flats and nine family houses it built in 2006 for managers of the local carmaker Kia. The debt made Žilina the most indebted town in Slovakia.

Harabin runs for Judicial Council post

Polish tourist dies after a fall in the High Tatras

A Polish tourist fell from the peak Východná Vysoká in High Tatras on October 7 and died. The mountain Rescue Service informed the TASR newswire that in the morning, a Polish tourist saw a woman falling from this peak which is 2,428 meters tall towards the Veľká Studená valley. The rescuers thus asked airborne rescuers for cooperation who landed at the heliport in Starý Smokovec and took two mountain rescuers onboard. However, they could not get to the valley due to strong wind and clouds, and thus returned and continued on foot.

Third block of Mochovce power plant to be launched in 3Q16

The third block of the Mochovce nuclear power plant will be launched in the third quarter of 2016, and the fourth in 2017, energy utility Slovenské elektrárne (SE) General Director Luca D’Agnese said at the construction site in Mochovce (Nitra region) on October 7. “The third block is complete up to around 80 percent,” said D’Agnese, as quoted by the TASR newswire. Further possible delays in the completion of the nuclear power plant will depend on the approval of SE’s new budget by company shareholders, noted the SE general director. “If the budget is approved, 2016 as the date of completion is a good estimate,” said D’Agnese, adding that both the majority owner Enel (66 percent) and the state of Slovakia (34 percent) must okay the budget. D’Agnese did not specify the amount needed to complete the blocks and stressed that the completion of the nuclear power plant is not related to the planned sale of Enel’s shares.
