Slovaks slow to launch own businesses
JUST one-third of Slovaks would prefer own entrepreneurial activities to the status of being a regular employee, analysts of Poštová banka point out in the latest Chart of the Week bulletin referring to a Gallup survey, the TASR newswire reported on October 9.
Slovak charged with insurance fraud detained in Cuba
A SLOVAK man who was being sought by police over alleged insurance fraud has been apprehended in Cuba, the TASR newswire learned from Martin Waldl of the Police Corps Presidium’s communications and crime prevention department on October 9.
Foreign trade surplus was €232.8 million over August
Slovakia’s surplus in foreign trade stood at €232.8 million in August of thisyear, based on preliminary data published by the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ). Exports in August reached €4.679 billion on a y-o-y drop of 2.4 percent. Imports in the eighth month came down 3.1 percent to €4.446 billion, the SITA newswire quoted the ŠÚ.
Kiska to leave for Leipzig for V4-German meeting
President Andrej Kiska has left for a German trip on October 9, invited by his counterpart Joachim Gauck. In Leipzig, he will attend the commemorative celebration of the 25th anniversary of the fall of communism in central and eastern Europe, and a joint meeting of presidents of the Visegrad Four countries (Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia) and Germany.
Skalský: Opening of Slovak House in Prague postponed
The ceremonial opening of Slovak House in Prague has to be postponed from the planned date of October 13 – the day of President Andrej Kiska’s visit to the Czech Republic – to a so far unspecified date, chairman of the World Association of Slovaks Living Abroad Vladimír Skalský announced on his social network profile.
Government forgives Žilina’s €17.5 million debt
THE GOVERNMENT adopted a resolution at its session held in Žilina on October 8 which forgives the city of Žilina of a debt at €17.5 million it took for building a Korean village in Krasňany. The town failed to sell seven blocks of flats and nine family houses it built in 2006 for managers of the local carmaker Kia. The debt made Žilina the most indebted town in Slovakia.
Falsified analysis over PPP project to go unpunished
THE OFFICE of the Special Prosecutor stopped the prosecution in the case of falsified analysis over the advantages of using public-private partnership (PPP) projects when constructing cross-country D1 sections between Martin and Prešov, the Sme daily reported in its October 9 issue.
Police arrest one of the last living ringleaders of Sýkora gang
A MAN identified only as František B., an entrepreneur who appeared on the police corps’ mafia lists and is considered one of the last three living ringleaders of the so-called Sýkora gang, has been detained by police over ‘drug activities’, the TASR newswire reported on October 8.
Harabin runs for Judicial Council post
ŠTEFAN Harabin, former chair of the Supreme Court and the Judicial Council, will run for the last empty post in the Judicial Council. His candidacy was submitted by 10 judges of the Supreme Court. His rival in the election, which will take place on November 25, will be Dušan Čimo, the SITA newswire reported. Čimo was dismissed from the council by parliament shortly before September vote of new Supreme Court head.
Penta wants to buy Petit Press
THE PROSPECT of the financial group Penta buying its way to Petit Press publishing house has prompted concerns about journalistic independence in the 21-year-old group, which publishes a major daily Sme, Új Szó, Slovakia’s only Hungarian-language daily, and the regional daily Korzár, and is the majority owner in The Slovak Spectator.
Čo bolo, bolo

It was used most recently by former Transport Ministry official Peter Havrila, who will not be tried for forging official documents with potential damages in the hundreds of millions of euros, but it has been applied throughout the country’s history.

Court approved restructuring process in Váhostav
THE BRATISLAVA I District Court accepted the request to start the restructuring process in the construction company Váhostav. The decision has already been published in the Business Bulletin and it is not possible to appeal against it, the SITA newswire reported on October 8.

Matej admits borrowing money for SDKÚ debt guarantee
FORMER treasurer of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) Ondrej Matej admitted that he borrowed money from companies linked to two tycoons, which he later used as a guarantee for the party’s loan, the Sme daily reported in its October 8 issue.
Most soldiers returned from Afghanistan
DEFENCE Minister Martin Glváč welcomed home 242 Slovak members of the last rotation returning from Afghanistan, where they served within the ISAF operation, in Topoľčany on October 7.
Šefčovič may not oversee transport
SLOVAKIA’S nominee for the post in the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič may not oversee transport as was expected. According to the public-service broadcaster Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS), he may become vice president of the EC and be responsible for energy policy.
Hungarian Foreign Minister visits
Slovakia and Hungary have “multi-coloured” relations, so disagreements in certain spheres should not be viewed dramatically, Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák said after a meeting with his Hungarian counterpart Péter Szijjarto in Bratislava on October 7. “It was an opportunity to hold bilateral talks to debate issues like two mature partners, like two EU-member countries. This is how we’ll progress,” said Lajčák, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
Polish tourist dies after a fall in the High Tatras
A Polish tourist fell from the peak Východná Vysoká in High Tatras on October 7 and died. The mountain Rescue Service informed the TASR newswire that in the morning, a Polish tourist saw a woman falling from this peak which is 2,428 meters tall towards the Veľká Studená valley. The rescuers thus asked airborne rescuers for cooperation who landed at the heliport in Starý Smokovec and took two mountain rescuers onboard. However, they could not get to the valley due to strong wind and clouds, and thus returned and continued on foot.
Third block of Mochovce power plant to be launched in 3Q16
The third block of the Mochovce nuclear power plant will be launched in the third quarter of 2016, and the fourth in 2017, energy utility Slovenské elektrárne (SE) General Director Luca D’Agnese said at the construction site in Mochovce (Nitra region) on October 7. “The third block is complete up to around 80 percent,” said D’Agnese, as quoted by the TASR newswire. Further possible delays in the completion of the nuclear power plant will depend on the approval of SE’s new budget by company shareholders, noted the SE general director. “If the budget is approved, 2016 as the date of completion is a good estimate,” said D’Agnese, adding that both the majority owner Enel (66 percent) and the state of Slovakia (34 percent) must okay the budget. D’Agnese did not specify the amount needed to complete the blocks and stressed that the completion of the nuclear power plant is not related to the planned sale of Enel’s shares.
