CE.ZA.AR prizes awarded
THE EIGHTH year of the CE.ZA.AR awards, organised by the Slovak Chamber of Architects, now knows its winners. The award ceremony took place on October 8 in the Old Town Hall.
Five run for Judicial Council seat
FIVE candidates, including Štefan Harabin, who earlier this year failed in his bid to get re-elected as Supreme Court president, will run for a vacant seat on the Judicial Council, which oversees the operation of the judiciary in the country. The deadline for submitting candidacies elapsed on October 13, with Harabin’s critics dubbing the November 25 election as a “litmus test of the condition of the country’s judiciary” as 1,400 judges will be voting to pick their representative on the council.

Šefčovič to oversee Energy Union
FOR SOME time it seemed that Slovak diplomat Maroš Šefčovič would oversee the transport and space portfolio in the European Commission, satisfying Slovakia’s voiced ambitions to get a strong economic department. Šefčovič is now however promoted to serve as EC vice president for the Energy Union, far surpassing expectations.

Draft budget sparks debate
FREE trains for students and seniors or wages for scientists? Which is more important?Prime Minister Robert Fico’s government has made their choice as students and pensioners are set to travel for free, a decision that will cost the state budget about €13 million, a number similar to the sum by which the state is going to reduce the budget of Slovakia’s biggest scientific institution, the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) for 2015. The scientists are letting it be known they are none too happy with the decision.

Gefco marks 10 years in Slovakia
ONE of the biggest logistics providers in the country, Gefco, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary of operating in Slovakia. Once primarily a logistics provider for manufacturers, Gefco Slovakia has broadened its portfolio to include some 600 clients from various sectors including automotive, pharmaceuticals, paper, retail, machinery, electronics and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG).
Boarding house in High Tatras was destroyed by fire
THE LIMBA guest house in Tatranská Kotlina in the Prešov region was engulfed by fire earlier on October 10, with Adrian Tropp of the District Headquarters of the Fire and Rescue Corps in Poprad confirming that the fire was immense.

THE FIRST Cuban-Slovak festival that presented folk artisans and artists from Cuba took place on October 5 in the municipality of Babiná in the Zvolen district.

IN SPRING, the project of Chamber opera (Komorná opera) was founded, with the stated goal of aiding and promoting students and fresh graduates of musical fields to get work experience, learn to connect with the audience and to utilise their full potential.
Bicycle was the fastest
A CAR driver, a cyclist, a public transport traveller and a runner competed during the morning rush hours in Bratislava to see who will reach Hlavné Námestie square in Bratislava’s centre from Bratislava’s borough of Rača during the mobility week in mid-September. Those competing had to travel or run a route eight kilometres long and also buy breakfast in a grocery store on the SNP Square. The cyclist reached the destination first and the runner was the last, Michal Feik, an advisor of Bratislava Mayor Milan Ftáčnik, informed the TASR newswire.

Drums of the World 2014
BRATISLAVA is one of the places (there are only a few of them in Slovakia as of now) where festivals of drums and percussions take place. After the Drummers’ Gatherings / Bubenícke slety, originally Czech events took place a few times in the Slovak capital; but there still remains a gap in this musical genre.
Days of Slovak literature festival held in Bratislava
THE ZERO year of the biggest literary festival called Days of Slovak literature started in Bratislava on October 15. During the four days the festival offers in total 92 happenings introducing 146 authors and illustrators, as well as musicians, dozens of presenters and other performers, the TASR newswire reported.
