Judicial Council did not share Kiska’s doubts
CANDIDATE for judge Judita Gabonaiová-Hrenčuková, whom President Andrej Kiska failed to appoint, is back in the game. The winner of the selection procedure at the Rožňava District Court repeatedly won the trust of the Judicial Council. The President will thus have to deal with her appointment again, Sme daily reported on October 21.
J&T rejected information about buying Slovakia’s largest publishing house

First punishment in Mariatchi fights is €400 fine for kicking in the head
PROFFESIONAL soldier Tomáš S. admitted his guilt in beating attack at the Mariatchi bar in downtown Nitra in October 2013. Now he has to pay fine €400 for two kicks to the head of one Mariatchi customer while the attacked man was lying on the ground unable to protect himself, Sme daily website reported on October 20.

Failed candidate for constitutional judge demands punishment for advisors to Kiska
SUPREME Court judge Zuzana Ďurišová and Banská Bystrica regional judge Juraj Babjak were members of the consultancy committee of President Andrej Kiska that assessed candidates for constitutional judges. Now they both face a threat of disciplinary prosecution due to unpaid membership in the committee.

Slovak Philharmonic celebrates start of season
THE SLOVAK Philharmonic (SF) opens the 2014/2015 season with a concert commemorating the 65th anniversary of its founding, repeating the programme almost identically. On October 23 and 24, playing the composition Dolu Váhom / Down the Váh River of Slovak Alexander Moyzes and Symphony No 8 G Major by Czech Antonín Dvořák, while also adding a piece that is new compared to the historical concert: Concert for Violin and Orchestra by Dezider Kardoš.
Cargo ferry on Danube in 2015
CONSTRUCTION of a cargo ferry on the Danube River between Slovakia’s Štúrovo and Hungary’s Esztergom should be complete by next June. The ferry will connect Esztergom’s industrial park with Štúrovo’s logistics area and the railway reloading station, the TASR newswire wrote on October 6.
The worst publicity gimmick
SLOVAKIA has seen nearly as many stories of integrity as stories of corruption over the 25 years that have passed since the Velvet Revolution. The story of the Sme daily, which was founded in response to efforts by Vladimír Mečiar, the country’s notorious three-time prime minister, to silence the daily Smena, which was not coinciding with what Mečiar and his buddies envisioned for society, is one such story of integrity and the desire for freedom.

Another trend sees increased technological demands for industrial premises and a push for energy efficiency.
Government stamps to go electronic
ANNOYING travel from government offices to postal offices and back, all for a government stamp called a “kolok” to prove payment for that office’s service will be a thing of the past as starting next year a new electronic stamping system goes into effect. Stamps in the current form will be used until the end of 2014 when the state will introduce a new electronic stamping system which allows citizens to buy an e-stamp directly in the office. By the end of the year, some payments for government services will be available also via mobile phones. Current paper stamps will be available until the end of November and valid until the end of the 2014, the SITA newswire reported.
Slovak Telekom fined
THE EUROPEAN Commission has fined Slovak Telekom (ST) and its parent company Deutsche Telekom €38.84 million for the abuse of their dominant position on the market. Deutsche Telekom (DT) also received an additional fine of €31.07 million to prevent recidivism. Thus the total fine of ST and Deutsche Telekom is almost €70 million.
Minimum monthly wage up 7.95 %
THE MINIMUM monthly wage in Slovakia will go up from €352 in 2014 to €380 (€2.184 per hour) in 2015, which represents an increase of €28 or 7.95 percent. The cabinet approved the increase on October 14 after the tripartite consisting of representatives of the government, employers and trade unions had failed to reach a consensus on the matter.

BRATISLAVA felt adrenaline coursing down the Danube River, as the first year of the Trans Danube Swim was held on September 27, at 14:00, as part of the travelling festival From Pole to Pole (Od pólu k pólu) on the occasion of World Tourism Day.
