Viera Ďuricová to get French award

HEAD OF the film events department of the Slovak Film Institute (SFÚ) Viera Ďuricová will get a prestigious French order in November, the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, granted by French Culture Minister Aurélie Filippetti. Events not remembered clearly

TWENTY-FIVE years after the remarkable events of November 17, 1989, the knowledge about what actually happened is not perfect even in the Slovak Parliament, where two of six deputies approached by the SITA newswire were able to answer two questions related to November 1989. The deputies were asked what happened on November 16, 1989 in Bratislava and when approximately the first free parliamentary elections took place after the Velvet Revolution. While four answered correctly the first question, only two gave an accurate answer to the second one.

VOTE: Bratislava will get new mayor, unofficial results show

THE EIGHT regional capitals of Slovakia witnessed several changes in their municipal leadership in November 15 municipal elections. According to the unofficial results published by Slovakia’s Statistics Office, after votes from 2,922 of the 2,923 towns and villages have been counted, the Slovak capital will get a new mayor: Ivan Nesrovnal, who ran as independent. Current mayor Milan Ftáčnik, who ran as an independent candidate with the support of the ruling Smer party, finished second.

VOTE: Independent candidates won most mayoral posts

RESIDENTS of Slovak villages, towns and cities elected their mayors and local council representatives on November 15. The municipal elections confirmed the ruling Smer party as the most popular in Slovakia, as they won more mayoral positions than in 2010 based on final official results announced by the Slovak Statistics Office on November 16. The turnover was 48.34 percent, a small drop from 2010’s 49.69 percent.

Ryanair coming to Bratislava
