Opposition fails to dismiss Paška
SPEAKER of Parliament Pavol Paška did not face a no-confidence vote after Smer MPs did not support the programme of the special session initiated by the opposition. The session was to take place only 30 minutes after the end of a failed no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Robert Fico which ended after 49-hour discussion, the TASR newswire reported on November 10.
Výboh allegedly asked for bribe
FRIEND of Prime Minister Robert Fico and alleged sponsor of the Smer party Miroslav Výboh was allegedly personally involved in negotiating the provisions for the purchase of the Pandur armoured vehicles by the second government of former Czech PM Mirek Topolánek. This stems from the testimony of Lutz Kampmann, former manager of the Austrian company Steyr, the Sme daily reported in its November 11 issue.
Court returns the platinum mesh case to the prosecutor
THE BRATISLAVA I District Court dismissed the lawsuit against three men charged in the platinum mesh case for procedural mistakes and returned it to the prosecutor. The judges missed, for example, the reference to the place where the alleged crime happened which may affect the selection of the court that will decide over the case.

THE SCANDAL involving the purchase of an overpriced CT scanner by Piešťany Hospital could have a competitor that even surpasses the original, according to Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) representatives, the TASR newswire reported on November 10.

SINCE November 8, 18:30 an extraordinary parliamentary session has been running during which the opposition is looking to pass a no-confidence vote in Prime Minister Robert Fico. It is historically the first session related to a no-confidence vote taking place at night; with several politicians having speeches more than one hour long, according to the Sme daily.

Economy minister visits Mochovce
PRIOR to the general assembly of Slovenské Elektrárne (SE) scheduled to decide about the increased budget for completing the second two blocks of the nuclear power station in Mochovce, Economy Minister Pavol Pavlis visited the construction site on November 3 to view the progress. He reiterated his criticism over the slow and expensive work, but indicated that the state would agree to the increase in budget, as well as the extended deadline.

Experimental lab opens
DESIGNERS, researchers, engineers, students or entrepreneurs have a new place where they can create and put the results of their work into practice relatively quickly. A new experimental space, FabLab Bratislava, was ceremonially opened at the Faculty of Informatics and Information Technology at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava on November 4 in the presence of Juraj Draxler, the State Secretary of the Education Ministry, French Ambassador Didier Lopinot, and other officials.
Last battle of an old war re-enacted in Lamač
THE LAND between the Bratislava boroughs of Lamač and Záhorská Bystrica was revived in mid-October by a historical re-enactment of the Prussian-Austrian war. On October 11 and 12, the re-enactment of the 1886 battle near Lamač that ended the war between these two 19th-century superpowers was organised by the members of the BS-13/Stoh (Haystack) civic association collaborating with the borough of Lamač.

State's e-marketplace draws mixed reviews
THE INTERIOR Ministry has revealed the first results of its €3.5-milion e-marketplace project to save money and help tackle corruption. Since tests were launched in July, 34 trades have taken place, saving the state about €21,000. While the ministry talks success, watchdog groups remain sceptical.
Learning history in the field
IT MAKES a difference whether history is learned from textbooks or by visiting actual places where the described historic events really took place. Slovak students and other visitors were able to experience the difference on October 27 and 28 while attending the commemoration of the 70th anniversary – organised by the French Embassy – of the Slovak National Uprising in Strečno. In this region, French partisans joined the Slovak revolt against the Nazi-satellite Slovak State.
