GDP growth forecasts reduced

SLOVAKIA is expected to continue in its economic growth, but its dynamics should be lower that originally forecast due to an expected slowdown of leading trade partners. The European Commission as well as the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) issued updated economic forecasts for 2015 and 2016. José Ángel Gurría, Secretary General of the OECD, himself came to Slovakia to present the updated outlook and congratulate Slovakia on its fight against the economic crisis.

Car industry keeps dominating

SLOVAKIA experienced the biggest interest on the part of French investors back in 2003 and 2004 when a French carmaker decided to launch a brand-new plant in Trnava and when Slovakia became a member of the European Union. During the following years, the number of French companies in Slovakia doubled. This increase was halted by the global economic financial crisis, and now stagnates at about 400. In spite of this, France is one of Slovakia's largest investors and trade partners.

Foreign children flee foster homes

PARENTS send them to Europe to save them from a life in poverty, but many times such children end up as modern-day slaves forced to work, beg or prostitute. Slovak authorities have detained more than 770 immigrant children without parents over the past five years. Many of those who were placed in children’s homes run away and are never found, according to a study by the Human Rights League (HRL).

Unhealthy food in buffets banned

UNHEALTHY food will disappear from school buffets as of January 2015, according to an amendment to the Education Act passed by parliament on October 29. The new provision was submitted by Smer MP and former deputy speaker of parliament Renáta Zmajkovičová, the SITA newswire reported.

French cars rolling out in Trnava

SLOVAKIA is home to three carmakers of which PSA Peugeot Citroën in Trnava is the second oldest. In early November, cyclist Peter Sagan, who is the ambassador of the Citroën car brand in Slovakia, symbolically marked the 400,000 Citroën C3 Picasso that rolled off Trnava’s production lines, the TASR newswire wrote.

Election is spiced with intrigue

EVEN the number of billboards promoting local election candidates since September suggests that campaigns started well before the official October 29 launch date. Two weeks in advance of the November 15 elections, top Smer officials have begun to visit with voters, while the Sieť party is withdrawing some of its candidates and attempted election fraud has already taken place. Slovaks will select their mayors and members of municipal parliaments of more than 2,900 municipalities, including 138 towns and cities. Around one quarter of those who are running for mayoral posts are women.

16 countries will attend radio drama festival

THE PUBLIC-service Slovak Radio (SRo) will host the Prix Ex Aequo 2014 Children’s and Youth Radio Drama festival that will present the best pieces from drama production across the world after two years. Altogether 16 countries will present their programmes in Bratislava between November 10 and 14, the SITA newswire reported.

A fistful of euros

A 53-YEAR old woman was given a six month conditional prison sentence for giving a €5 bribe to a physician from Nitra for a confirmation of temporary sick-leave in early November. The local prosecution is investigating dozens of other patients over the transgression of giving bribe to a physician. The physician is being prosecuted for the crime of taking a bribe, and if found guilty, he might be locked behind bars from three to eight years, according to a SITA newswire report.

THE FRENCH-SLOVAK school, which has existed since 2003, started the academic year 2014/2015 at a new location. L’école française de Bratislava moved from Cadrova street in Bratislava’s Kramáre borough into the reconstructed building of a former elementary school at Marie Curie Sklodowska Street in Petržalka.

Official who leased car charged

THE POLICE have charged the former head of the state firm MH Development, Ladislav Košecký, for, among other things, leasing a car from a company he owned and paying fines for this conflict of interest with state money. More issues remain under investigation.
