OECD predicts the 2.8 percent growth in 2015
SLOVAKIA’S economy should rise by 2.8 percent in 2015, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) predicts. In the following year, it should even accelerate to 3.4 percent, the TASR newswire reported.
Prvá Slovenská Investičná Spoločnosť to become majority shareholder in Petit Press
MANAGEMENT of the Petit Press publishing house and representatives of the Prvá Slovenská Investičná Spoločnosť (PSIS), NAMAV, the subsidiary of the SITA newswire and Penta Investments Limited financial group closed negotiations over the shareholder relations in Petit Press. The PSIS will be controlling the majority, 55-percent share, SITA reported on November 5.
Police charge Košecký
FORMER executive director of the Economy Ministry-owned company MH Development Ladislav Košecký was charged with violating his duties when administering someone else’s property, Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák told the press on November 5. He added that the National Criminal Agency has already launched a second prosecution in the case.
Foreign Affairs Ministry rejects sending observers to eastern Ukraine
SLOVAKIA does not recognise the self-proclaimed republics founded in eastern Ukraine, does not consider the November 2 elections legitimate, and sent no observers to monitor them, the country’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said on November 5. The statement came as a response to information about one Slovak, who attended the elections in Donetsk region as an observer.
Eustream announced Open Season
SLOVAKIA’S main gas pipeline operator Eustream announced the Open Season procedure for the increased interruptible capacity at Budince interconnection point, in order to transparently offer such capacity, the company informed in a press release sent to media on November 4.
Three European counties contributed €6 million for Slovak monuments
Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein have contributed about €6 million to reconstruct 13 Slovak monuments within the Norwegian Financial Mechanism and the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area, the so-called Norwegian Funds. Slovak Monuments Board General Manager Katarína Kosová told the SITA newswire on November 4 that Slovakia has a cultural heritage that exceeds its economic possibilities.
Fico considers Vážny for interim Health Minister
Prime Minister Robert Fico on November 4 stated that he will most probably commission one of the members of the government to head the Health Ministry on an interim basis following the resignation of Zuzana Zvolenská a day earlier, and that Vice Premier for Investments Ľubomír Vážny is a candidate. “Vážny is another Government member with very vague results and whose name has been linked to various shady tenders,” the opposition Most-Híd party wrote in a statement. “In our opinion, he’s the most inappropriate candidate for the post.”
EU: Slovakia’s GDP growth to accelerate in 2015 and 2016
At 2.5 percent, Slovakia may record the sixth highest GDP growth in the eurozone and the ninth highest in the European Union as a whole in 2015, according to the autumn 2014 forecast released by the European Commission on November 4.
Čižnár orders a check on the purchase of a CT scanner
GENERAL Prosecutor Jaromír Čižnár ordered criminal authorities to check the dubious purchase of a CT scanner in Piešťany Hospital of Alexander Winter, which was announced shortly after parliament elections in March 2012, the TASR newswire reported on November 4.
Mečiar a witness in the case of a former Privatisation Ministry employee
VLADIMÍR Mečiar was a witness in the case of Ivan Beňačka, a former employee of the now-defunct Privatisation Ministry, who is accused of blackmailing in Mečiar’s name. Beňačka allegedly called himself Mečiar’s friend and a SIS agent.

SLOVAKIA’S deep economic and financial integration with core Europe, moderate government debt ratios, high debt affordability and a receptive domestic debt market are the credit strengths underpinning the A2 government bond rating with a stable outlook, Moody’s informed in its report issued on October 31.
Police reportedly investigating Košecký
NOT ONLY an inspection of the Economy Ministry, but also police currently are investigating Ladislav Košecký who was recently dismissed from the post of the executive director of the ministry-owned company MH Development, because he leased a vehicle from his own firm Mertimex, the Sme daily reported in its November 4 issue.
Prosecutor Office laid charges in the Mariatchi case
THE PROSECUTOR General’s Office charged five men in relation with last year’s attack targeting guests of the Mariatchi bar in downtown Nitra. The prosecutor accused them of disorderly conduct and attempted bodily harm, the TASR newswire reported on November 3.
Economy Minister visited Mochovce to criticise it
ECONOMY Minister Pavol Pavlis criticised the process of third and fourth bloc of Mochovce nuclear power plant constructions saying he is not satisfied with the realisation and projecting of the construction, during his visit to Mochovce on November 3, the TASR newswire reported.

Health Minister Zvolenská ends due to dubious tender
PRIME Minister Robert Fico called on Zuzana Zvolenská to resign from the post of Minister of Health due to a widely criticised tender for purchasing a CT scanner in Piešťany Hospital of Alexander Winter announced shortly after parliament elections in March 2012. Zvolenská, however, is not the only top official who has to resign due to the scandal: Deputy Speaker of Parliament Renáta Zmajkovičová, who sat at the helm of the board of directors at the hospital, also resigned from both positions upon Fico’s request.
Former education minister will not go to court
BRATISLAVA III District Court on October 31 threw out a case against former education minister László Szigeti of the Hungarian Community Party (SMK), who had been charged with fraud involving the redirection of a subsidy originally intended for reconstructing a school gym in Zemianska Olča (Nitra region) to a private company, court spokesman Pavol Adamčiak told TASR on the same day.
Slovaks commemorated All Saints Day
PEOPLE throughout Slovakia used this past Saturday and Sunday to visit the graves of their deceased relatives, bringing flowers and lighting candles. Following All Saints Day on November 1, which is a public holiday in Slovakia, All Souls’ Day is commemorated on Sunday.
Judge accused of procrastination
THE GENERAL Prosecutor Office accused Bratislava I District Court judge Juraj M. of procrastination. Due to his mistakes several alleged members of the so called ‘cashpoint mafia’ were released from prison in November 2013 and May 2014, the TASR newswire reported on October 30 referring to the private broadcaster TV Markíza website.
The first Slovak extradited from Venezuela
FOR the first time ever a Slovak national sought by the country’s authorities was extradited from Venezuela and brought to Slovakia on October 30, the TASR newswire learnt from Police Corps Presidium spokesman Michal Slivka a day later.
