Slovak flying car gets attention
TWO Slovaks, Štefan Klein and Juraj Vaculík, showed the world how passenger transport will look in the future while presenting their AeroMobil at the Pioneer Festival in Vienna on October 29. Their project was a sensation and drew the attention of media from all around the world.
Penta to withdraw to minority
THE PENTA investment group which is buying into Petit Press publishing house through the company Namav has agreed to withdraw to a 45-percent minority share and thus leave the controlling 55-percent package to the Prvá Slovenská Investičná Skupina (PSIS), the original founder of the publishing house. Penta, which originally was set to buy a 50-percent stake in Petit Press, the publisher of flagship newspaper daily Sme, is to sell a 5-percent share to PSIS and according to Petit Press CEO Alexej Fulmek, the financial group will have no influence over editorial content in the publishing house.
Nourishing mutual relations
THE FRENCH-Slovak Chamber of Commerce (FSKO) was launched in 1994 and currently has more than 150 members. After the commercial department of the Slovak Embassy in France was cancelled in 2011 and because the commercial department of the French Embassy in Slovakia has not been providing commercial services for French companies as of January 2012, FSKO is the only institution serving these purposes on the bilateral level, Dušan Huszár of FSKO told The Slovak Spectator.
Tax changes perceived mostly negatively
WHILE Robert Fico’s government puts closing legal loopholes for tax avoidance and consolidation of public finances as the motivation for tax changes adopted at the end of October, business and tax experts perceive them as mostly negative and worsening the business environment in Slovakia. The changes are a continuation of tax-related measures the Robert Fico government has adopted since it took power in 2012. That year it scrapped the flat tax, which it used as some of the main bait for foreign investors.
President appointed Viliam Čislák as new Health Minister
ON NOVEMBER 6, President Andrej Kiska accepted the resignation of Zuzana Zvolenská from the post of Health Minister and subsequently appointed ministry State Secretary Viliam Čislák as her successor. Both opposition and nurses union do not expect any significant change in healthcare policies, the TASR newswire reported.
US Embassy wants to find a new site in 24 months
THE US Embassy will move from Hviezdoslavovo Square in the centre of Bratislava in 24 months, as the US State Department wants to construct a new building for it and has already launched activities to that effect, Embassy press attaché Janelle Luna told TASR on November 6.

Slovakia will have a point-of-contact office in Palestine
SLOVAKIA’s Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák is set to open a point-of-contact office for Slovakia in the West Bank city of Ramallah next week during his visit to Palestine, TASR learnt from the ministry’s press department on November 6. Before going to Palestine, Lajčák will pay a visit to Israel on November 10. While in Israel and Palestine, the Minister is expected to meet his counterparts to discuss bilateral issues, economic relations and the security situation in the Middle East.
Work starts on D1-highway tunnel of 687 metres in Žilina
The 11-kilometres of D1 highway section Hričovské Podhradie – Lietavská Lúčka will include a tunnel. On November 5 work on a two-tube tunnel in Žilina, to be 687 metres long, began.

An extraordinary parliamentary session to debate the scandal involving state-run company MH Development will not take place, as the ruling Smer party with a majority in parliament, rejected its programme November 5.
Independent MPs will support extraordinary session on Paška
The independent MPs Juraj Droba, Martin Chren, Jozef Kollár, Daniel Krajcer and Juraj Miškov will support the convening of an extraordinary parliamentary session on recalling the Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška, if the opposition agrees on a joint proceeding.
Candidate for Prešov mayor quits, incumbent from Lunik IX commits suicide
The nominee of the non-parliamentary Sieť party for the post of Prešov mayor, Martin Ďurišin, on November 5 gave up his candidacy and recommended his sympathisers to vote for Andrea Turčanová, the nominee of the coalition Christian-Democratic Movement-KDH, Slovak Democratic and Christian Union-SDKÚ – Most-Híd – Ordinary people and Independent Personalities-OľaNO – NOVA – OKS.
Beblavý indicates relation between Košecký and Gašparovič
LADISLAV Košecký, former executive director of the Economy Ministry-owned company MH Development, who has been recently charged by the police for several pieces of mischief related to his post, is a close relative of former president Ivan Gašparovič, opposition MP Miroslav Beblavý said on November 5.

Government adopts new energy policy
THE GOVERNMENT passed a new energy policy for Slovakia at its November 5 session. It counts, among other things, the construction of new nuclear power plant or gradual inhibition of renewable energy resources support with higher redemption prices, the SITA newswire reported.
Health minister, deputy speaker out
THE SHADY purchase of an overpriced computed tomography (CT) device by a financially ailing hospital has cost Smer nominee Zuzana Zvolenská the post of health minister and Renáta Zmajkovičová, a key Smer official who sat at the top of the hospital’s supervisory board, the post of parliamentary deputy speaker. Prime Minister Robert Fico called on the two officials to resign just days after the Sme daily and the private television station Markíza broke the story on the Piešťany Hospital of Alexander Winter buying a CT scanner with a price tag three times higher than similar devices in the Czech Republic.
