Google Pay does not share actual card details. Instead, the merchant receives a unique encrypted number. Google worked with leading payment networks and financial institutions to deliver industry-standard security tokenisation. With tokenisation, the retailer receives a 16-digit number instead of an account number.

Nevertheless, experts of the IT security company Eset recommend sticking to three basic security measures when using Google Pay, Apple Pay or similar services.
