More than a beast?
ARE HUMANS really any more than animals (zvieratá), and do we come closer to perfection (and further from our animal past) as our civilization develops? I thought a new answer to this tired question might be found in the wisdom of the Slovak language, and have conducted a little research from this perspective. The treasure of Gothic art in Slovakia
THREE statues over two metres high of Madonna, St Catherine, and St Barbara, from Banská Štiavnica, which were carved in wood at the beginning of the 16th century, most probably belong to one altar. Since the altar was dismantled in 1727, nobody has seen them stand next to each other. The Madonna belongs to the local Church of St Catherine, and the two other saints are the property of the town's Slovak Mining Museum.

Energy habits adopted in childhood
A HUNT for the oldest electric household appliance is a contest that major Slovak energy distribution company Západoslovenská energetika has organised for 13-year-old children. The issue of energy conservation is coming more and more into focus in the face of today's environmental problems. It is believed that an environmental approach towards life has to be acquired during childhood so that, as an adult, one sees it as a normal lifestyle.Children in the eighth grade at 300 elementary schools in Slovakia enter the contest by filling in a questionnaire where they describe the equipment in their households, highlighting the oldest appliance.

SLOVAKIA will join the EU in less than six months. This membership will boost growth in Slovakia and eventually - given supportive policies - the country could catch up to the living standards of its EU partners. At the same time, Slovakia's reputation abroad is now very positive. Many observers have come to regard Slovakia as the most reform-oriented economy in central Europe.
