Nemecká Ľupča
Nemecká Ľupča has been somewhat forsaken as of recently, but remains among the most beautiful towns of the Liptov region. During socialism, the town had a prouder name - Partizánska (Partisan) Ľupča - which recalled its role in the Slovak National Uprising.
Fico suggests attempt to corrupt him
PRIME Minister Robert Fico suggested at a business conference on October 30 that attempts have been made to corrupt him, but later reports showed that he has never turned to the police with such information.
"We found agreement"
FOLLOWING a press briefing on October 31, at which he delivered his opposition SDKÚ party's response to the resignation of Deputy Agriculture Minister Marin Záhumenský over an apparent conflict of interest (see story on page 1), former Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda gave an interview to The Slovak Spectator in which he said that, despite appearances, the opposition was united and was working together.
Delivery services lifted by strong economy
EXPRESS delivery firms in Slovakia are seeing double-digit growth in sales for the second year in a row due to factory investments and the overall growth of the Slovak economy.For example, TNT Express saw a 42-percent rise in sales in Slovakia from January to September this year compared to the same period last year. DHL Express saw exactly the same sales increase in Slovakia during the first half of 2006.
Slovak Post relieved as liberalisation postponed
AT THE BEGINNING of this year, the Slovak postal market was getting ready for complete liberalisation as of January 2007, an ambitious date that would have put it ahead of many other EU countries. However, an ongoing debate over how to compensate the universal postal service provider, Slovenská Pošta, for any losses due to the step, has caused the date to be pushed back to 2009, if not later.
