Bratislava hosts air conference
INDUSTRY EXPERTS met in Bratislava on May 4 for the second annual Air Transport Conference, "Business in the Sky". The agenda included issues such as the role of the government in the air transport industry, traditional versus low cost airlines, problems at airports, and recent trends in the aviation business.
Museums and galleries open till midnight
SLOVAK museums and galleries in Bratislava will stay open late into the night on the International Day of Museums on May 19. As the event becomes more and more popular in Slovakia, a larger number of museums and galleries are joining in and preparing programmes for all ages.

Russian firm could acquire 49% stake in Transpetrol
AFTER almost a year of trying to regain ownership of an all-important 49 percent stake in Transpetrol, the only oil pipeline operator in Slovakia, the Robert Fico government is now saying it will not stand in the way if a Russian firm is interested in buying the shares.

MOST SLOVAKS think membership in the European Union is a good thing for the country.Seven out of ten Slovak citizens expressed this opinion in a survey conducted by the TNS SK company in April of this year, on a sample of 1,010 respondents.

Qualified labour force wanted
A GROUP of companies at an industrial park in the town of Žiar nad Hronom (Banská Bystrica Region) have decided to take matters into their own hands and deal with the lack of qualified labour by building their own training and education centre.

Cabinet tightens belt for 2007
THE FICO government has agreed to spend less than it anticipated next year, under pressure from the European Commission, but the prime minister says he is not happy about the restrictions on his social spending plans.At a cabinet meeting on May 9, the government agreed to cut Sk1.5 billion from planned spending next year and to reduce the public finance deficit from 2.4 percent of GDP to 2.3 percent.
War between Slovak judges
Several dozen Slovak judges have apparently suffered serious mental trauma, at least judging from a lawsuit in which they demand compensation from the state for setting up the Special Court. The litigating judges say it is in conflict with equal treatment, because their colleagues on the Special Court have higher salaries.
