With the president's signature

Of the many laws that parliament approved at its March session, the president vetoed only two, neither of which was as important as a law that Gašparovič chose to sign, despite the fact that it regards basic human rights and freedoms, and quite clearly is in conflict with the Constitution.

Little pomp at War commemoration

SLOVAKIA wanted a dignified commemoration of the 62nd anniversary of the end of World War Two, without the big fuss and ostentatious pomp that was so typical during socialism. After all, the point was to reflect on the bloodiest conflict in history, in which 60 million people were killed.

IN THE WAKE of Prime Minister Robert Fico's recent visit to Moscow, political scientists and observers have been asking if the visit marks a radical change in the direction of Slovakia's foreign policy.

Transforming co-workers into team players

TAKE EIGHT co-workers whose daily personal contact is limited to a couple of phone calls and the occasional passing "hello", and send them all down the river in a raft. This is not part of a new layoff strategy, but is rather what human resource experts call 'experimental team building', which, when successful, should see the group leaving the raft as a functioning team.

The standpoint of Mr Putin

In 2007, the policy of the Slovak government towards Russia is the same as it was in 1997. Defensive collapse ruins hockey dream

WHEN a Slovak player had to dive to glove the puck out of the defensive zone in the chaotic first five minutes of the national team's opening game against Norway, it was a sure sign that defence was not the strong point of this year's Slovak World Championships entry.

Help in the fight for kids' attention

IN AN AGE of computer games, television and the internet, it is becoming increasingly difficult for teachers to hold their students' attention. In order to compete, many have taken advantage of the Innovative Teachers Network, a programme organised by the software giant Microsoft that includes an online portal for teachers (Modernyucitel.net) and workshops to help keep teachers up to date on the latest in information technologies.

Who will have to change?

When the Party of European Socialists (PES) decided in October last year to suspend the Smer party and review its decision in June 2007, it did so because Smer hadn't respected the conclusions of its Berlin Congress, at which it was decided that no European socialist party would be allowed to cooperate with a political party that "supports or tries to arouse racial or ethnic prejudice or racial hatred".

In Slovak slang, everything is 'nuts'

THERE are many ways to learn a foreign language. I attempted to learn French for years by studying it academically and reading novels by the greats, such as Baudelaire and La Fontaine. The problem with that method occurred to me when I stepped off the plane in France and found myself unable to communicate with the natives.
