EC prescribes stricter fiscal discipline
THE MESSAGE from the European Commission to Slovakia, which hopes to adopt the euro on January 1, 2009, was straightforward: contain possible inflationary pressures and adopt a tighter fiscal stance. Slovakia's response: pressures are under control, fiscal consolidation is sufficient.

Enough nonsense about SPP
Culture Minister Marek Maďarič was right when he said last weekend that "the privatisation of SPP is a scandal that cannot be forgotten". But he failed to mention that the credit belongs to the Fico government and its tireless propagandists.
Mečiar's HZDS shrinks
TIBOR Mikuš, Trnava regional governor and an MP for Vladimír Mečiar's Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), confirmed on January 25 he had left the party, which is a junior member of the three-party governing coalition. He said he disagreed with the policies of Mečiar's leadership, the ČTK newswire wrote.
Slovakia benefits from EU membership
AS MUCH as 70 percent of Slovaks think that Slovakia benefits from its membership in the European Union. This is 12 percentage points above the EU average. These findings stem from Eurobarometer, the survey of public opinion in 27 EU member states, three candidate countries, and the Turkish Cypriot Community in the area not controlled by the government of the Republic of Cyprus conducted between September and November 2007.
Obesity Legislation Misguided
Slovakia is not yet in an obesity epidemic but current trends are all pointing in that direction for the future, wrote Marta Durianová in her piece Health experts call for anti-obesity plan, published on January 21.
Fifth Annual Blueberry Awards given out
THIS YEAR'S Bratislava Čučoriedka (Blueberry) Awards, an annual prize given out to those deemed to have enriched Bratislava life the most, went to ethnologist Soňa Kovačevičová and doctor Barbara Ukropcová.
Slovak films fail to attract audiences
LAST year, Czech films earned 200 times more domestically than Slovak films in Slovakia, the Sme daily wrote. Slovak films accounted for only one percent of the audience as well as sales. Out of 2.7 million spectators who went to cinemas in Slovakia last year, only a few more than 28,000 saw one of the five Slovak films which premiered last year. They paid Sk2.8 million.

SLOVAKS will not need to wait for Slovak euro coins until January 1, 2009, when Slovakia is scheduled to adopt the single European currency. They will have a chance to touch the coins in December 2008 if they buy a starter pack, the Pravda daily wrote.

Marko Igonda in Berlin as Shooting Star

Following in the footsteps of Tatiana Pauhofová, who attended the Shooting Stars project at the Berlin International Film Festival last year, Marko Igonda is travelling to Berlin this year. The eleventh year of the project, which presents young, up-and-coming European actors to festival-goers, will take place from February 9 to 12 as part of the 58th year of the prestigious festival.
