EDUCATION Minister Ján Mikolaj wants to make modern European institutions of Slovak elementary and high schools. He plans to spend almost Sk11 billion (Ř333 million) on computers, broadband internet access and a Data Centre school database by 2011, of which Sk7 billion should be covered from EU funds. The minister unveiled the four-year modernisation plan on February 19, the SITA newswire wrote.
British pedophile faces charges in Slovakia

THE IKORES firm, whose owner sponsored the ruling Smer party and built a flat for Prime Minister Robert Fico's mother, has won hundreds of millions of crowns in state contracts since 2006 elections, most recently a Sk100 million order to build a new departure ramp at Bratislava airport.

TENDERS for mowing lawns, snow removal and cleaning offices will cost three more senior ministry officials their jobs. Defence Minister Jaroslav Baška announced on February 15 that he would dismiss section heads by March 15, the SITA newswire wrote.
Parliament upholds monopoly of Slovenská Pošta
THE SLOVAK postal service company Slovenská Pošta will keep its monopoly for letters up to 50 grams. On February 15, the Slovak parliament adopted a revision to the law on postal services safeguarding its monopoly in this segment. For instance, bills from telecommunications operators fall in this group, the SITA newswire wrote.
Electronic signature becoming more common
AS OF October 31, 2007, the Tax Office registered 16,834 documents with a qualified electronic signature (QES), the SITA newswire wrote.
