No political criteria for euro adoption, insists PM
THERE will be no political criteria for Slovakia to fulfil prior to introduction of the euro from next January. We can start paying with euro once the Maastricht criteria have been met, said Prime Minister Robert Fico after hosting a lunch for EU ambassadors on March 12. "There is an understanding that there are no criteria other than the Maastricht [economic] criteria," Fico told journalists, referring to earlier speculation that Slovakia's entry might also be subject to additional, unspecified political criteria.
Making it into the big leagues
THE WORLD Bank has signaled that Slovakia could soon graduate from its class of borrowers to the ranks of developed countries that provide developmental aid. The upgrade is seen as a badge of honour in recognition of the country's economic development.
KDH breakaways launch new conservative party
FOUR former leading members of the opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) are establishing a new political party. On March 12, Vladimír Palko, Pavol Minárik, František Mikloško and Rudolf Bauer started a petition to collect the 10,000 signatures required to register a political party, the SITA newswire wrote. The party will be called the Conservative Democrats of Slovakia (KDS).

EASTER is usually the second peak of the skiing season in Slovakia, especially when it's early in the year. There's still enough snow in March, yet the day stays light a little longer and skiers' sleeves are a bit shorter.

Eastern Slovakia steels itself for new mills
TWO new steel mills are at the planning stage in eastern Slovakia. Slovakia Steel Mills plans to start building a new factory in the unused premises of Chemko in Strážske in the summer, while Košice-based SSIM company recently submitted to the Environment Ministry plans to build a new plant in Mokrance, close to Košice, the Hospodárske Noviny financial daily wrote.

Slovak health insurers seek to resolve EU pickle
BEFORE Slovakia joined the European Union, if a Slovak was employed in Austria and registered with an Austrian health insurance company, Slovak law allowed his or her children to remain registered with a Slovak health insurer. In effect, this meant that the Slovak state health system paid the healthcare costs of the children of Slovaks working abroad.

MISTREATMENT of Roma criminal suspects; lengthy pre-trial detention; corruption in the judiciary, local government and health sector; and routine discrimination against Roma remain the blemishes on Slovakia's human rights record, according to the annual report on human rights practices released by the US State Department on March 11.

Slovakia launches euro adoption campaign
EXACTLY 300 days before its planned adoption of the European single currency Slovakia has launched a publicity campaign about the new currency. Slovakia is aiming to swap the koruna for the euro on January 1, 2009, the SITA newswire wrote.
Lučenec industrial park construction complete by fall
LUČENEC, in south-central Slovakia, wants to wrap up construction of an industrial park with assistance of EU structural funds by the end of August this year. Milan Marko, the mayor of Lučenec, is holding talks with potential investors from Austria and Ukraine, a spokesperson for the Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency (SARIO), Jana Murínová, told The Slovak Spectator. Talks are focusing on the terms of cooperation agreements.
